For the sage whose mind is made clean by devotion to me, and who knows how to hold his thought steady, an understanding arises that sees all three times, full of knowledge of birth and death. Fire and the other elements cannot kill the sage whose body is made of yoga. His mind is stilled by union with me, as water is no danger to the creatures that live in it.

Three words carry the verse. Dharana is concentration, from dhr, to hold: keeping the mind on one thing the way a hand holds a lamp steady. Traikaliki buddhi is understanding of the three times, past, present and future. Yogamaya vapu is a body made of yoga, a body so shaped by practice that it is no longer an ordinary target. Krishna describes a yogi whose mind has been cleaned by devotion to him and who can hold it steady. Such a person is said to see across the three times and to understand birth and death. Fire and the other elements cannot kill his body. Krishna gives a comparison: water does not hurt fish, because they live in it. The yogi's mind is stilled in union with Krishna, and the elements are no threat to him. These are two items from the list of eighteen siddhis, the powers. Krishna lists them in answer to Uddhava's question about what yoga can bring. Sridhara Svami, the classic commentator, reads such lines as describing results of concentration on Krishna. Krishna is not recommending them. Verse 11.15.32 calls these powers obstacles and wasted time for one who seeks him. The cause is devotion and a quiet mind, and the listener is asked to keep the cause and let go of any wish for the results.

A raw clay pot cracks when it meets fire, but the same pot, once fired, can sit on the hearth and cook rice every day. The fire is the same; the pot has changed. In the same way, the yogi's long practice has changed what the body and mind are made of.

1. Tonight, sit for five minutes with the phone in another room. Hold one thing in mind, such as a name of God you love, and each time you drift, bring the mind back gently. 2. Notice how your mind feels during those minutes: heavier, lighter, or just busy. Write one line about it. 3. Tomorrow, when something flares up, whether a sharp word or a rush of worry, take one slow breath before you answer. 4. If a wish for special powers comes up, set it aside. Just do the five minutes again.

A woman is frying pakoras at a family wedding when the oil in the pan flares up. Her hands know two reactions: freeze, or throw water on it. A person who has practised steadiness tends to do something different. She notices the flame, turns off the burner, and slides a lid over the pan. Panic narrows the mind; practice in staying calm keeps it wide enough to find the next small step. Ordinary experience confirms that people who have drilled a response do better under pressure than those who have not. That is where today's understanding stops. The text's own teaching is larger: a body made of yoga that fire cannot kill, and an understanding that sees past, present and future. Krishna says it of the accomplished yogi, and it is not offered as safety advice. Nothing here makes a person fireproof. A burn needs cool water and a doctor, a kitchen fire needs a lid or an extinguisher, and the fire brigade comes when the fire is large.
