Meaning · English

Meditating on my glories, and on the Shrivatsa mark, the weapons and the ornaments that adorn me, and on the banner, the parasol and the fan, he becomes unconquered. For the sage who worships me in this way, with yogic concentration held on me, the powers spoken of earlier wait upon him, every one of them, without exception.

Four words carry this. Vibhuti means a glory or splendour, from vi and bhu, to become and spread out: the many forms in which Krishna's greatness shows. Dharana means concentration, from dhri, to hold: keeping the mind in one place the way a hand keeps hold of a rope. Aparajita means unconquered, one not defeated by another. Siddhi means a power or accomplishment, from sidh, to succeed. Krishna tells Uddhava to rest the mind on his glories and on the marks of his form: the Shrivatsa curl of hair on his chest, his weapons, his ornaments, and the banner, parasol and fan of a king. He says a mind held there is not defeated. Then he says that for the sage who worships him with such steady holding, the powers described earlier stand ready, all of them. The teaching comes at the close of his long account of the eighteen powers. Uddhava is hearing what yoga can bring, and Krishna names the cause: the mind kept on him. He does not offer the powers as something to chase. In the verses that follow he calls them obstacles and a waste of time for one who seeks him. The listener is asked to keep the mind on Krishna, and to treat the powers as a side matter.

A traveller crossing a dark field keeps his eyes on one lit window in a far house. Stalls and sights line the path, and he passes them. The lit window is Krishna's glory held in the mind; the stalls are the powers, which are there along the way but are not what he walks toward.

1. Choose a quiet five minutes today, perhaps before sleep. 2. Bring one picture of Krishna to mind, such as the curl of hair on his chest, the parasol, or the fan, or a picture you already keep. 3. When the mind drifts, notice where it went and bring it back to the picture, without scolding yourself. 4. Afterward, notice how many times it drifted. Repeat tomorrow.

A bus conductor is working a crowded evening route when a passenger shouts at him over change. His chest tightens and his mind fills with replies. Everything in him is being pulled toward the insult. The verse offers him something else to be pulled toward. Suppose that earlier, on quiet mornings, he has practised holding one picture of Krishna, the banner, the parasol, the fan. When the shouting starts, that picture is already worn smooth as a place to return to. He sees the anger rising, goes back to the picture, and his breath slows enough to answer evenly or say nothing. Ordinary experience confirms that a mind practised at returning to one thing is harder to knock loose. Krishna's own claim goes further: such a sage is unconquered, and the powers wait on him. That is his teaching, and the verse does not promise that the passenger will calm down, that the day will go smoothly, or that any power will appear. It does not remove fatigue or a real grievance, and it does not replace rest, food or help where help is needed.
