For the sage who has mastered his senses, steadied his breath and mind, and holds his meditation on me, what accomplishment is hard to reach? Yet those who know say these accomplishments are obstacles for one practising the highest yoga, who is being brought to me. They are causes of wasted time.

Three words carry the teaching. Siddhi means accomplishment, from a root meaning to succeed; here it is a power gained through yoga. Dharana means holding, from a root meaning to bear or hold; here it is keeping the mind fixed on Krishna. Antaraya means obstacle, literally what comes in between. Krishna first describes the practitioner: senses mastered, self-controlled, breath and mind steadied, mind held on him. For such a person, he says, no power is out of reach. He does not deny the powers. Then comes the turn. Those who know call these same powers obstacles for someone practising the highest yoga, because they stand between him and the goal. They are also called causes of wasted time. The reason is the aim. The practitioner is being led to Krishna himself. A power is a pleasant stop on that road, and the stop can swallow the days meant for arriving. Sridhara Svami's commentary, as far as the commentators agree, reads the warning as applying to the one whose goal is Krishna, not to every seeker of power. This answers Uddhava's natural question: if the powers come, why not use them? Krishna's answer is that they cost time, and the time is the very thing that cannot be spared.

A man walks to a friend's house for a long-awaited meeting. On the way he passes a fair with games and music, and each stall is good in itself. The fair is a siddhi, the friend's door is Krishna, and the danger is that the afternoon runs out before he reaches it.

1. Today, notice one small thing that tempts you to stop and show it off: a skill, a bit of knowledge, a neat result. 2. Before you display it, ask quietly: is this taking me toward what matters most to me, or only holding my time? 3. If it is only holding your time, set it down within ten minutes and return to your main task. 4. At night, note in one line how much time you saved.

A young violinist has played well at a family wedding. Relatives crowd round, and a cousin asks her to play again at three more events this month. She feels the pull. Praise is pleasant, and the invitations are real. The verse asks one question first: what was the playing for? If she took up the violin to be near the music itself, each invitation costs practice hours, and the applause pulls her away from what she loved. She can answer that plainly, accept one invitation, and decline the rest without rancour. Ordinary experience confirms that attention is limited, and an hour spent on one thing is gone for the other. The verse does not say praise is wrong, and it does not say she will feel no pull. It also gives no instruction about the violin. It speaks of yoga and of Krishna as the goal, and it makes no promise that her days will become simpler.
