Whatever powers there are in this world, whether from birth, from herbs, from austerity or from mantras, a person gains all of them through yoga. Through those other means he does not reach the way of yoga. Of all the powers I am the cause, the master and the lord. I am the source of yoga, of sankhya, of dharma, and of those who speak of Brahman.

Three words carry this. Siddhi comes from sidh, to succeed or be accomplished. It is a power that has been attained. Yoga comes from yuj, to yoke, to join the mind to what it is turned toward. Hetu means cause, the reason a thing exists at all. Krishna first lists four roads to powers: being born with them, herbs, austerity and mantras. He tells Uddhava that yoga alone gives all of them. The others do not carry a person onto the path of yoga. Then he turns the list around. He is the cause of every power, its master and its lord. He is also the source of yoga, of sankhya (the analysis of what makes up the world), of dharma, and of those who teach about Brahman. Why say this here? Uddhava has just heard about eighteen powers. Krishna answers the question behind them: where do they come from, and are they worth chasing? In the verses just before, he has said that for a person who seeks him these powers are obstacles and a waste of time. Here he gives the reason. A power is a gift from the giver, and to stop at the gift is to miss the one who gave it. The commentators read the second half as the ground for the first. What asks for attention is the owner of the powers, not the powers themselves. Nothing here promises Uddhava a power.

A caretaker's ring holds one key for every door in a large building. Each room has its own lock, and each lock seems important while you stand at it. Behind all of them is the owner, who built the house and let the keys be cut. The powers are the rooms. Krishna is the owner.

1. Once today, when you catch yourself wanting a shortcut to something (a quick fix, a trick, a remedy that promises too much), stop for ten seconds and ask what you actually want underneath it. 2. Pick one fixed moment, such as the first cup of tea, and spend two minutes remembering Krishna as the giver of whatever good came to you that day. 3. That evening, name one ability you have, such as cooking, patience or a good memory, and say quietly that it was given to you.

A student sits up the night before a competitive exam. A cousin has pressed on him a bottle of some herbal tonic, said to sharpen the memory. He is tired, frightened, and ready to believe in it. Krishna's teaching begins by asking where any ability comes from. The student can ask what a tonic would actually be adding to what he already has. Ordinary experience answers part of it: a rested mind recalls more than a worn one, and years of steady study do more than any single night. He can see that his real capacity was built slowly, by sleep, practice and care. He can also hold the exam itself more lightly, as one task given to him and not the measure of his worth. The verse names herbs as one of the old roads to powers, and a plant can have a real effect on the body. Medicine is still medicine, and a doctor should be asked about anything taken regularly. What the teaching does not promise is a pass mark. It does not remove the fear of the morning, and it does not turn a night of tiredness into a night of strength.
