Nearer Than the Elements
Bhagavata Purana 11.15.36
Meaning · English
I am the self within all embodied beings, and I am outside them too, covered by nothing. As the elements are within and around the things they make, so I am, of myself, within and without.
Krishna uses three small words here. Antar and bahya are inside and outside. Anavrta comes from vr, to cover, and means uncovered: nothing veils him, nothing shuts him in or out. Bhuta is an element, literally what has come to be, from bhu, to be. Krishna says he is the atma of every embodied being, the self at the centre of each one, and that he is also outside them. Then he gives his comparison. Earth, water, fire, air and space are inside every body and are also all around it, and no body can be found without them. In the same way he is both the innermost thing and the surrounding thing, and he is so of himself, not by being placed there. The verse sits in the teaching on the eighteen powers. Krishna has just said that for one who seeks him, such powers are obstacles and a waste of time, and that he is their source. This verse gives the reason: what the seeker wants is not far off, and no power is needed to reach it. He is already within and around. What it asks of the listener is to stop looking for a distant prize. The commentators read the verse as a statement of his nearness, not of any limit on him.
A sponge sits in a basin. Water fills every hole inside it and also surrounds it on all sides, and the sponge cannot be lifted out of the water without the water going with it. So Krishna is said to be within each being and around it, with no gap between.
1. Tonight, sit for five minutes by a window or doorway, with the room behind you and the open air in front. 2. Feel your breath go in and out. Notice that the air inside you and the air outside are the same air. 3. As you breathe, say Krishna's name once or twice, remembering the verse: within and around, uncovered. 4. Tomorrow, repeat it for one minute before your first meal.
A man sits in a hospital corridor at two in the morning while his wife is in surgery. The chairs are hard, the clock is slow, and he feels shut out, with nothing in his hands to do. The verse would change the minutes, though not the facts. Krishna tells Uddhava that he is the self inside every being and also all around them, covered by nothing. So the man need not go anywhere to find help. He can say the name where he sits, and the corridor becomes a place where that nearness is already said to be. Then his breath slows, because he has something to turn toward. Ordinary experience agrees that a person waiting alone feels the hours differently once he has something steady to attend to. The limit is plain. The verse does not promise that the surgery goes well, does not take the fear away, and does not replace the surgeon or the nurse who will come through the door with news.
