Uddhava says to Krishna: You are the highest Brahman, plainly before us, with no beginning and no end, and nothing covering you. Of everything that exists you are the keeper, the standing-ground, the ending and the source. In beings high and low you are hard to know for those whose minds are not yet ripened. Yet the brahmanas worship you, Lord, as you truly are.

Uddhava is opening a question, and he begins by saying who he thinks Krishna is. Three words carry it. Brahma comes from a root meaning to grow vast: the whole that holds everything. Apavrita means uncovered, with no veil over it. Akritatma means a self not yet finished or trained, a mind still unsettled. Uddhava first names Krishna as Brahman, standing in front of him with nothing hidden. Then he says Krishna has no beginning and no end, and that everything that exists is protected by him, stands in him, ends in him and arises from him. Next comes the puzzle. If Krishna is uncovered, why is he hard to know in beings high and low? Uddhava's answer is that the fault lies in the knower: minds not yet ripened miss him. The brahmanas, the knowers, worship him as he truly is, not as a partial or borrowed form. The commentators take this praise as the ground for the request that follows, since Uddhava wants to learn where Krishna's presence can be seen. The verse asks the listener to take Krishna as the whole, and to suspect their own sight before doubting that he is present.

Someone searches the whole house for their glasses while the glasses sit on their own forehead. Nothing hides them. The one searching looks in the wrong way. Krishna is the glasses in plain view, and the unripened mind is the searcher.

1. Tonight, pick one ordinary thing, such as a lit lamp, a pot of rice or a plant on the sill. 2. Sit with it for three minutes and notice how it arose, how it stands now, and how it will end. 3. Say quietly, "This too rests in him." Notice only whether the thing looks any different to you. 4. Do this once a day for a week, choosing a new thing each time.

A grandmother kneels in the garden at dusk, pressing tomato seedlings into the soil. Frost is forecast for Thursday. She knows some will not last, and she plants them anyway. The verse speaks to this moment. Krishna is named as what keeps things, what they stand on, what ends them and what they arise from. The seedlings, the frost and her own hands all sit inside that one account. So the frost need not feel like an enemy that has broken in, and the planting need not feel like a gamble. She can tend the plants with care, cover them if she wishes, and let the outcome be what it is. The text teaches that the difficulty lies in unripened minds, not in anything being hidden, and ordinary experience bears this out a little: a settled person sees more of what is in front of them than a hurried one. The verse does not save the seedlings, ease the cold, or promise that grief at a loss will not come. It gives her a wider place to stand while it does.
