Meaning · English
Uddhava says to Krishna: In whatever beings the great sages worship you with devotion and reach perfection, tell me that. You move about hidden, Self of all beings, maker of beings. Beings do not see you, though you see them; they are bewildered by you. Whatever glories there are on the earth, in the sky, in the world below and in all directions, O greatly glorious one, tell me those, as you have known them. I bow to your lotus feet, the feet that are a holy crossing place.
Uddhava asks three things and then bows. Three words carry the weight. Bhakti is loving devotion, from bhaj, to share in. The sages here do not merely admire; they take part in what they worship. Vibhuti is a glory or special showing, from vi and bhu, to become in many ways. It means the places where the Lord's presence stands out. Tirtha is a ford, a shallow place where you cross a river. Uddhava calls Krishna's feet such a place: a spot to get across. The first clause asks in which beings the sages found the Lord and so reached perfection. The second says why anyone needs to ask. Krishna is the Self within every being and the maker of beings, yet he moves hidden. He sees them; they do not see him, because they are bewildered by his own working. The third clause asks for the glories in earth, heaven, the lower world and the directions, named by Krishna himself, since only he knows them. This is why the question is put here. Krishna has just been called the unknowable. Uddhava does not leave it there. If the Lord is hidden, he asks to be shown where the hiding thins. The bow shows he asks as a pupil. It asks of the listener only that he look where he is pointed, and begin by admitting he does not see well.
Someone turns the house upside down for their glasses while the glasses sit pushed up on their forehead. They look everywhere except the place closest to them. The Lord is like that: the Self in every being, passed over by those who search past him until a friend says, look here.
1. Tonight, before sleep, say to yourself one line: show me where you are. Mean it as a question. 2. Tomorrow, pick one ordinary thing you pass daily, a tree, a neighbour's face, a kettle's steam. Give it a full minute of looking. 3. Notice what you usually skip over. Do not decide what it means. 4. Bow slightly, in the mind or the body, before you move on.
A woman rides the night bus home after a cremation. She stares at her phone, though she is not reading it. Outside, a street lamp lights a sleeping child's head on its mother's shoulder, and she does not see it. Uddhava's verse would change the moment in small steps. First, it names the not-seeing as ordinary: beings are bewildered, and this is no fault of hers. Second, it gives her a question to carry, where is the Lord's glory here, in place of a demand to feel something. Third, she lifts her eyes and lets one thing, the lamp or the child, be looked at fully. Ordinary experience confirms that a worn-out mind narrows to what is directly in front of it, and that looking up on purpose widens it a little. Fourth, she ends with a quiet bow, as Uddhava does. The verse does not lift her grief, and it does not promise she will find anything on that bus. It gives her a way to ask, and the text's teaching is that the answer comes from Krishna, not from her effort. If grief or exhaustion is heavy, she should still speak to someone or see a doctor.
