Krishna says: Best of those who know how to ask, Arjuna put this very question to me once, on the battlefield, eager to fight the enemies who stood against him. He saw that killing his own kin for the sake of a kingdom was blameworthy and against dharma, and he drew back. He thought as the world thinks: 'I am the killer, and these are the killed.' Then that tiger among men was awakened by my reasoning. He spoke to me just as you now speak, standing at the head of the battle.

Uddhava has just asked Krishna to name his glories. Krishna begins by telling him that the question is not new. Arjuna stood where Uddhava stands now. Four words carry the story. Yuyutsu means one who wants to fight, from yudh, to battle. Arjuna came to the field wanting it. Adharma is what runs against dharma, the order that holds a family and a world together. Arjuna judged that killing kin for a throne was exactly that. Laukika means worldly, of the ordinary view of things. Krishna names Arjuna's thought, 'I am the killer, they are the killed,' as the ordinary view. Pratibodhita means awakened, from budh, to wake. Krishna says he woke Arjuna by reasoning, not by command. So the clauses run in order. Arjuna comes eager. He sees the wrong in the aim and turns back. He frames it as his own act of killing. Krishna answers with argument, and Arjuna rises and speaks. The last line ties the two scenes. Uddhava also stands at the front of something terrible, the coming end of Krishna's clan, and he also asks. Krishna is saying that this kind of asking has a long answer, and he has given it before. The commentators read the opening as praise for a questioner who asks what truly needs asking. The verse asks of the listener only attention: to hear the old answer as an answer to a living question.

A traveller holds a map upside down and swears the road runs the wrong way. A friend turns the sheet around and the road falls into place. The road never changed. Krishna's reasoning does the same for Arjuna: it turns the view he already held until he can read it.

1. Tonight, write down one decision that has made you hesitate lately, in one plain sentence. 2. Under it, write the wording you keep using about it, such as 'I am the one doing this to them.' 3. Ask someone you trust, or a page in your own hand, to answer that wording as a friend would. Give it ten minutes. 4. Notice whether the decision looks the same once the wording is turned around.

A man is at his late father's house with a lawyer's papers in front of him. Signing will remove his younger sister from the house over a dispute about land. His pen stops. Everyone says he is within his rights. The verse speaks to this hesitation. First, it treats his reluctance as seeing something real, as Arjuna did, rather than as weakness. Second, it separates the pull toward the act from the way he describes the act to himself. 'I am the one who does this to her' is a framing, and the text says reasoning can loosen a framing, as Krishna's did for Arjuna. Third, it shows the man asking a teacher, not deciding alone in a rush. He can put the question aloud to someone he trusts. Ordinary experience confirms that a choice described in one sentence looks different when someone else answers it. The verse does not say what he should sign, and it does not take away the grief of a family split. It does not replace a lawyer or counsellor where he needs one.
