Meaning · English

Your father, Auddalaki Aruni, will know you again as he did before, because I have sent you back. Free of resentment, he will sleep easily through the nights, once he sees you released from the mouth of death.

Yama answers Nachiketas by granting the first boon, and three words carry it. Pratita means recognised, known again. Auddalaki will take the boy back as his own son, with no distance between them. Vitamanya means one whose anger has gone out of him: vita is gone, manyu is the hot, brooding anger that stays. Mrityumukha is the mouth of death, the place the boy has stood at, and he is now pramukta, set free from it. The plain sense is simple. The boy will return home. His father will see him alive and know him. The anger that sent him away will be gone, and the old man will sleep through the night. The reason is in the boon Nachiketas asked for. He did not ask first for himself. He asked that the man who wronged him in a rage might rest. Yama gives it fully, and names sleep as the sign: a mind with no grudge in it can lie down. Shankara reads pratita as recognition: the father will know his son as the very boy he gave to Death, and will not take him for a stranger. The listener is asked to see what Nachiketas valued first, which was the settling of a wound in the house he came from.

A hand that has gripped something tight all night aches and will not rest until it is allowed to open. The father's anger is that fist. Seeing his son alive and standing before him is the opening of it, and then the whole body can lie down.

1. Think of one person you are still sore at, or who is sore at you. Choose the smallest such quarrel. 2. Tonight, before you sleep, picture that person well and at ease. Hold it for two minutes. 3. Notice where in your body the grudge sits: jaw, chest, hands. Let that spot loosen once. 4. This week, send one plain message, such as a greeting or a question about their day, with no point to prove.

A mother lies awake after a bitter quarrel with her daughter, who left the house hours ago. She replays the last sentences, and each one sharpens the anger and the fear together. Then she hears the key in the door. The daughter is home, tired, saying little. What changes is not an argument won. The mother sees her child whole and in front of her. Her shoulders drop, the replaying slows, and she goes to bed. The verse describes this same release. Yama promises Nachiketas that his father's anger will leave when he sees his son alive, and that sleep will follow. Ordinary experience agrees on one point: a mind holding a grievance or a fear stays on watch, and rest comes when the cause of the watch is gone. Step by step, the scene runs: the person is seen, recognition comes first, the anger loosens next, and sleep comes last. The verse does not promise that every quarrel ends this way, that a long-held hurt will vanish in one night, or that poor sleep needs no doctor. It names what sleep rests on, which is a mind with no grudge to guard.
