Therefore, Uddhava, know your own self through knowledge. Rich in knowledge and in lived realization, worship me with a heart of devotion. The sages worshipped me, the Self, within the self, by the sacrifice of knowledge and realization. In me, the lord of every sacrifice, they reached full perfection.

Krishna draws a conclusion for Uddhava, and three words carry it. Jnana is knowing, from the root jna. Vijnana is knowing that has been lived until it is no longer borrowed. Bhakti is loving devotion, from bhaj, to share in. Yajna is sacrifice, an offering made into a fire. The first clause says: having understood your own self, be full of both kinds of knowing. The second says: from that fullness, worship me with real feeling. The third says the sages did exactly this. Their sacrifice had no fire, no grain and no priest. Knowledge and realization were the offering, the self was the altar, and Krishna, the Self within, received it. Krishna names himself lord of all sacrifices, so every other offering was already his. This follows from the earlier verses. Krishna has said the knower is dearest to him, and that austerity and pilgrimage fall short of even a sliver of knowing. A listener might conclude that knowledge is cold and stands apart from love. Krishna closes that gap. The commentators read the verse as joining understanding to devotion, so that each completes the other. It asks Uddhava to let what he knows turn into worship, and to treat his own inner life as the place where it happens.

Someone studies a map of a town for months, then walks its streets until the turns are in their feet, then knocks at a friend's door. The map is knowing, the walking is realization, and the knock is devotion, which is where the journey was always heading.

1. Choose one thing you already understand to be true, such as that you are more than your worries. Say it aloud once, slowly, this morning. 2. Sit for five minutes in a quiet corner and let that understanding settle until it feels like your own, not a sentence you read. 3. Then offer the day to Krishna in a few plain words, in any language, as a gift given in love. 4. At night, note one moment when the knowing and the offering were together.

A woman sits beside her mother's hospital bed at two in the morning. She has read every leaflet and knows the numbers, the drug names and the likely course. The knowing keeps her busy, but the room still feels empty and her hands do not know what to do. Krishna's teaching begins by asking that knowing go further than facts, until it is lived. For her, that might mean letting the facts settle into a plain understanding of what is happening and what is not in her hands. Then comes the second step, which is to give the hours as an offering and not as a task. She holds her mother's hand, says a name of Krishna softly, and stays. The vigil becomes an act of love. Ordinary experience agrees that facts alone rarely steady a frightened person, and that presence given with care often does. The teaching does not promise that her mother recovers, that grief stays away, or that she needs no doctors or rest. It speaks only to how she spends the night.
