The threefold change that rests in you, Uddhava, is maya fallen in between. It is not there at the start or at release. Birth and the rest, what are they to you? What is absent at the beginning and the end is absent in the middle too.
Krishna speaks to Uddhava about the vikara, the threefold change. The word means a modification, as milk turns to curd. The commentators generally read it as the shifting work of the three gunas, which make up body, senses and mind. Krishna calls it maya, here something measured out and appearing, not a lie. It drops in between, meaning it shows up only in the stretch between a start and a finish. Before the body there was none of it, and at release none remains. Then comes the question about birth and the rest, the changes of the body such as growing, ageing and dying. Krishna asks what they are to Uddhava, the one who watches them. The last line gives the test. What is not there at the beginning and the end is not there in the middle either, in the sense of not standing on its own. The line comes inside Krishna's talk on knowledge, after Uddhava has begged to be taken along. Krishna is loosening Uddhava's grip on what is passing, since parting is near. He asks the listener to look at what changes and ask whether it was always there.
A wave rises on a lake, runs a few metres and sinks. Before it there was only still water, and after it the same. The wave is real while it moves, but it was never something apart from the lake. The changes of body and mind are the wave.
1. Tonight, sit for five minutes and pick one feeling from today, such as worry, irritation or delight. 2. Ask where it was this morning before it began, and where it will be by tomorrow. 3. Notice that you were there before it came and are still there as it goes. 4. Say its name quietly, then go on with your evening without arguing with it.
A grandfather stands at the glass of a maternity ward at dawn, holding the cold tea he forgot to drink. He is overjoyed, then suddenly afraid for the child, then aware of his own stiff knees. Three moods pass in a minute. The verse speaks to such a moment in steps. First, name what is moving: joy, fear and ache each rise and fade, and ordinary experience confirms that no mood stays at full strength for long. Second, notice that he is the one still standing there watching them arrive. Third, follow Krishna's question about birth and the rest: the changes are real, but they are not all of who is looking. The text teaches this as the nature of the self set against the changing gunas. It does not promise that the fear will not return or that the child will never be ill. It does not remove grief, and it is no replacement for the doctor or midwife when one is needed. It offers a place to stand while the changes pass.
