The Queen's Allegory: Escaping Bad Company
Tripura Rahasya 5.111
The story · English
The queen spoke to the prince, and she began with herself. Her mother, Mahananda, had a name that means great joy, yet she was joyless, and she had no parents of her own. Her daughters were beyond counting, women just like the queen, rising one after another like waves on the sea. All of them lived as she did. The queen said she held a great mantra, and she kept company with all these friends, who were close to her as a mother is. In the city where they lived, when the son of a friend grew very tired, he lay down on his mother's lap, restless even then, and slept deeply. When he slept, his sons and the others slept too, and no one stayed awake. Only one friend of his kept watch over the city, going back and forth at its two eastern gates. His name was Pracara.
The restless one was called Asthira. His mother was a friend of the queen, and she had a friend of her own, a mother-in-law who was wicked by nature. While everyone slept, this woman covered them all and guarded them together with her son. Then, the queen said, she would reach her own mother, and be glad, and rest in her arms a long while. Afterward she followed the others as they woke, day after day. Pracara was strong, and he fed every one of Asthira's mouths each day. He made himself many and filled the city and its people, guarding and joining them. Without him they would scatter, like beads with no thread. He joined the queen to all of them, and she gave him life. When a city grew old, he led them quickly to another, and so he became lord of many cities.
Asthira was the son of a good woman, the queen said, and though he leaned on that mighty friend, he suffered. She herself had fed that suffering. He had two wives, Capala and Mahasana, and two sons, Jvalamukha and Nindyavritta. He had five other sons as well. All of them dragged him this way and that. His heart was wrapped in great pain, without a trace of ease. Capala shook him until he was worn out. Mahasana sent him running after food. Jvalamukha struck him and burned him from foot to head, and he fell into a deep faint, not knowing any cure.
When Nindyavritta caught him, others blamed and scolded him, and he thought himself as good as dead, sunk in sorrow. He had bad wives and bad sons and had been born into a bad family. Deluded, he was carried wherever they took him, and he lived in cities of every kind. Some were wild forests, some lands of flesh-eaters, some scorching hot, some freezing cold, some foul with the smell of bones, some thick with darkness. His mother, the queen's friend, grew foolish with grief through this bad company. The queen said she too, though wise by nature, followed that family day after day, bewildered. She asked who ever finds even a little happiness in bad company. It is like a man walking a desert in summer, hoping to quench his thirst.
After a long time, the friend, dazed with grief, met the queen in private. Through union with the queen alone, she found the way. She won a good husband, conquered her own son and killed him, and bound his sons and the rest. Then she went with the queen, quickly, to the queen's mother's city. She embraced that mother again and again, free of stain, and she was soon plunged in an ocean of joy. The queen turned to the prince. "In the same way, my lord, hold back the wrong ways that come from your friend. Reach your own mother, and enjoy lasting happiness. I have told you this from my own experience, and it leads to happiness."
