The cool season passed, and spring came round again. King Dasharatha was ready to keep his vow. He went to Rishyashringa, the young sage who carried a look of the gods about him, bowed low, and asked for his help with the sacrifice that would give him heirs. Rishyashringa did not refuse. He asked only that everything the rite needed be made ready. The king sent his minister Sumantra to bring the priests, and they came: Vasishtha, Suyajna, Vamadeva, Jabali, and the son of Kashyapa. Dasharatha honoured each one and said, "I have no son, my lords, and so I have no happiness. I have decided to offer the horse sacrifice, with Rishyashringa to guide it." They praised him together. "You will see the sons you long for," they said.

His spirits lifted, the king gave his orders. "Prepare the sacrificial ground on the northern bank of the Sarayu. Let the horse go free with guards and a priest beside it. And guard every step, because wandering demons watch for the smallest slip, and when a rite is spoiled, the one who performs it is lost." The priests promised to obey, bowed, and left. Dasharatha went in to his wives. "Begin your purifying rites," he told them. "I am preparing an offering that will bring us sons." Their faces brightened like lilies when winter is over. Another spring came, and the year was complete. The king went to Vasishtha and spoke humbly. "You are my most trusted guide, and my friend. Take this heavy work on yourself." Vasishtha gladly agreed.

Vasishtha called the old priests and gave out the work. "Post guards here, good and sensible men. Send for builders, for those who read the stars and those who dig, for actors and singers and dancers. Raise pavilions for the princes and thousands of shelters for visiting Brahmins, stocked with food and drink. Build stables for the elephants and horses, and great halls for warriors from far away. Make tents for our own people, and keep food ready for every guest. Give your gifts out of respect, not pity. Do not let desire or anger make you slight even the humblest guest." They answered, "We will do as you say and leave nothing out." Then he turned to Sumantra. "Invite the kings of the earth, and people of every rank, in their thousands."

"Invite Janaka, who rules Mithila, our king's old ally and a man of firm vows. Invite the lord of Kashi, who has a kind word for everyone. Invite the king of Kekaya, father of our king's queen, and his son. Invite Lomapada, king of the Angas. Send word east, west and south, to Surashtra, Suvira and the Sindhu shore." Sumantra sent his envoys out and went himself to urge the greatest lords to come. Vasishtha told the craftsmen, "Let nothing be done badly, and let no gift be given with scorn. Whoever gives a gift with scorn commits a great wrong." Days passed, and the kings arrived with gems for Dasharatha. Vasishtha said, "My lord, the kings have come, and all is ready." Under favourable stars, the king went out to the sacred ground.

A full year went by, and the wandering horse was brought back. On the northern bank of the Sarayu the rite began, with Rishyashringa guiding the priests. They moved in solemn circles, fed the fires, pressed the sacred juice, bathed at dawn and at midday, and three times poured pure water over Dasharatha's head. They sang to Indra and the gods and poured the holy oil into the flame, and not one mistake was made. No one there went hungry or tired, and not even an animal lacked food. Orphans, widows, the old and the poor were all fed, and the cry went up on every side: "Give, give," and "Eat your fill." Food lay in heaps like hills. The Brahmins ate from plates of gold and silver and said to the king, "We bless you. We are satisfied."

When the time came, the sacrificial posts were raised: twenty-one in all, each twenty-one cubits tall, of bel, khadir, palasa, fig, sleshmat and devadar. Two of them were so thick that a man could not reach his arms around them. They were gilded, hung with ribbons, strewn with flowers, and they shone like the bright saints of the northern sky. The altar was built in the shape of an eagle with golden wings. Three hundred victims were tied to the posts, birds and water creatures, snakes and healing herbs, as the scriptures prescribe. The horse was sprinkled with water. Then Queen Kaushalya walked around him with reverent steps, hung sweet garlands on him, and with three swords, in the proper order, struck and killed him. That night, hoping for a son, she stayed calmly beside the dead horse until dawn.

A priest drew the marrow from the horse and boiled it, and the king bent over the fragrant steam, driving off every fault that might spoil his hopes. Sixteen priests laid the horse's limbs in the flame. The offering lasted three days, with many great rites, by day and by night. When it was done, Dasharatha gave the earth itself to his priests: the east to one, the west to another, the south and the north to the rest. But they gave it back. "Only you can rule the earth," they said. "Our lives are given to study. Give us something else." So he gave them a million cows and vast stores of gold and silver, and they passed it all to Vasishtha and Rishyashringa. The king said, "Holy one, let my family grow." Rishyashringa answered, "You will have four sons."

Rishyashringa thought for a while. "I will begin another rite," he said, "one that will bring the sons you long for." The gods gathered to receive their share, Brahma and Sthanu, Narayana and Indra with the Maruts. Rishyashringa said to them, "Dasharatha has offered the horse for you and trusted you completely. Grant him four sons." "We will," they answered. "We love the king and honour you." Then they went to Brahma. "Ravana, king of the giants, torments us and the saints. Because of your boon, no god or demon can kill him. The sun dims where he stands, the wind will not blow, the sea goes quiet, and Kubera has been driven from his home." Brahma thought, then said, "He asked protection from gods and demons and spirits, but in his pride he never thought of men. Only a man can kill him."

Then Vishnu came, shining like a flame, holding shell, mace and discus, in saffron robes, riding his eagle like the sun riding a cloud. The gods bowed. "Be our refuge. Dasharatha has three queens. Divide yourself into four and be born as his sons. Take a man's nature and kill Ravana." Vishnu asked, "What do you fear, and why must I go?" "We fear Ravana," they said. "His boon guards him from everything but man. Take a mortal birth and strike him down." Vishnu answered, "Do not be afraid. I will kill him in battle, with his ministers and all his kin. Then I will rule as a human king for eleven thousand years." Gods, saints and singers raised a song of victory: "Be born as a man, and end this cruelty that no one else can stop."

Vishnu chose Dasharatha as his father and decided to be born in four parts. As the king watched the rite, a huge being rose out of the fire, dark, robed in red, with a voice like a drum and hair like a lion's mane. In his arms, like a beloved wife, he held a golden vase of heavenly nectar. "The Lord of life has sent me," he said. "The gods accept your worship. Give this to your queens, and they will bear the sons you have prayed for." Dasharatha raised the vase onto his head, walked around the messenger in reverence, and the being vanished. The king hurried in and gave half to Kaushalya. Of the rest, Sumitra had part, Kaikeyi half of what remained, and Sumitra the last. Soon, each queen conceived.
