The story · English

The great sacrifice was over, and the young hermit Rishyashringa was still staying in the king's city. So the king called a Brahmin to him and said, "Go quickly to Kashyapa's son, the mighty seer. Tell him, with every respect, that the holy son he loves so dearly, a hermit of noble mind whose equal would be hard to find, has come back and is living here. Bow before that best of hermits in my place, so that for his dear son's sake he will go on showing me the favour I have won." The Brahmin set off as soon as the king had spoken. When he reached the hermit, he bowed low before him. Then, in humble words, he gave his master's message: "The high-souled father of your son's bride called him to guide his rites. Those rites are finished, and the horse has been offered. Your noble son has come back."

When the saint heard this, his heart filled with longing to go to the king's city and bring his son home to his hut. He set out at once, with his young disciples walking beside him. As he passed along the road, the farming people came running out of their villages to honour him. Each one carried a small gift of food, and they bowed their heads and asked him, "What can we do for you?" The saint, first and best among Brahmins, looked at the crowd and said, "Tell me, because I would like to know. Why am I being honoured like this?" They answered the high-souled saint, "Our king is joined to you by family. We are only doing what our master has told us. Be at peace, holy one." The hermit was glad to hear such kind words, and he poured his blessing on the king, his ministers and his whole city.

Some of the king's servants, delighted by the saint's words, hurried ahead to tell their master, knowing the news would cheer him. The moment the king heard it, he rushed out to meet the saint. He carried the guest-gift in his own hands, bowed before him and said, "Seeing you today, I know my life has not been lived for nothing. Please do not be angry with me for drawing your son away from you." The best of Brahmins answered, "Do not be afraid, great king. Your goodness has already won my favour. You have done nothing wrong." Then they went into the city together, the saint placed in front and the king following close behind in his happiness, while cheering rose around them. All along the way, people raised their joined hands and bowed to the holy man as he passed.

From the palace came a crowd of women, and with them, finely dressed, came Shanta. They stood before the mighty saint and said, "Look, honoured one. This is your son's dear bride." The saint, who knew every virtue, put his arms around his daughter and held her close with a father's joy, wondering at her. When she rose from his embrace, she bowed low before him, then stood quietly at his side with her palms pressed together. For his son, the saint performed the rite the law prescribes to wash away any stain. Then, honoured by the wise and the good, he went back with him to the forest. A full year turned after that great sacrifice. On the ninth day of the month of Chaitra, under a sky bright with gathered planets, Queen Kaushalya gave birth to a son, and he was Rama.

He was a lotus-eyed, beautiful child, marked with signs of heavenly grace, born of half of Vishnu's own strength. He had come to destroy the fierce Ravana and to help the suffering worlds. Kaushalya shone with new glory through him, as Aditi, the mother of the gods, once shone when she bore Indra, the king of the immortals. Queen Kaikeyi gave birth to Bharata, a prince of true courage and every princely virtue, one fourth of Vishnu made visible. Queen Sumitra bore twins, Lakshmana and Shatrughna, loyal and true, sharing in Vishnu's essence as well. The four were born at different hours, each like their father, bright as the four stars of Proshthapada. In heaven, the nymphs danced, the drums thundered and flowers fell like rain. In Ayodhya, the squares filled with music and dancers, and the king gave gifts freely to all. On the twelfth day, Vasishtha joyfully named each boy.

Rama was his father's greatest delight, and to all creatures he seemed like the self-existent god himself. The four grew into learned heroes, wise and gracious, full of love for everyone. Yet among them Rama shone like an unclouded full moon. He could guide an elephant, drive a chariot, ride a horse and master the bow, and he was happiest doing what his father wished. From infancy he loved Lakshmana best, and Lakshmana lived to serve him. He would not lie down to sleep unless Rama lay beside him, and he would not eat unless Rama shared the meal. When Rama rode out to hunt, Lakshmana followed behind, guarding him with his bow. In the same way, Shatrughna held Bharata's love dearer than his own life. With these four sons beside him, Dasharatha shone brighter and brighter, as if the Father of all creatures were walking the earth among men.
