How Lasting Success Grows

Mahabharata, Udyoga Parva 35.25

Meaning · English

Prosperity is born from good deeds. It grows through effort, puts down deep roots through skill, and becomes steady through self-restraint.

Vidura describes prosperity the way one describes a tree, in four stages. Three words carry it. Punya-karma, good action, is where prosperity is born: the seed is the act itself, and what kind of act it is matters. Pragalbhya, skill or capable handling, is what sends the roots down. A thing done clumsily stays shallow. Samyama, self-restraint, from a root meaning to hold together, is what makes it stable. Without it, success tips over. Taken clause by clause: prosperity starts from right deeds; it grows when someone keeps working at it; it goes deep when the work is done with skill; it holds when the person can rein himself in. Vidura says this to Dhritarashtra, a king who cannot sleep. The king wants his sons to prosper, yet has backed schemes that are not good deeds, and he cannot rein in his attachment to his eldest son. Vidura's point is that prosperity is not seized. It follows from the act, the effort, the skill and the restraint behind it. So before beginning, look at the act, at the person who will do it, and at what it is for. Nilakantha, the commentator, reads the last quality as control of the senses, which keeps gains from being squandered.

A young mango tree in a yard. It sprouts from a good seed, grows with watering, sends roots deep into well-turned soil, and then stands through a storm because the gardener tied it to a stake. Seed, growth, roots and staking match deed, effort, skill and restraint.

1. Pick one thing you mean to start this week, and write three lines before you begin: what the act is, who is doing it (you, with your habits and limits), and what it is for. 2. Ask whether the act is one you would be willing to explain openly to someone you respect. 3. Name one skill the task needs that you lack, and set aside twenty minutes to practise it. 4. Notice one urge that tends to spoil your follow-through, and pause for a slow breath when it comes.
