Truth Inside Duty

Mahabharata, Udyoga Parva 35.33

Meaning · English

No duty deserves the name if truth is missing from it. And no truth deserves the name if it comes wrapped in deceit.

Three words carry this. Dharma is the right way of living, duty and fair conduct. Its root sense is "to hold up", what keeps a life and a household standing. Satya is truth. It comes from the sense of "that which is": what is really the case, and speech that matches it. Chala is deceit, a trick or cover, from the sense of slipping and misleading. Vidura makes two claims, and each shuts a door. First, an act of dharma with no truth in it is not dharma. A duty built on a lie is only the outside of one. Second, a statement that is true in its words but carries deceit is not satya. A fact told to mislead, or half told to leave a false picture, does not count. Each of the two is tested by the other. Vidura says this to Dhritarashtra at midnight because the king is awake and unsettled. Dhritarashtra keeps finding respectable names for what he allows: a father's love, a king's duty. Vidura's answer is that a duty used to cover a falsehood has stopped being duty, and that careful, technically accurate words that hide the real matter are not truth. The king cannot shelter in either word.

A glass of water on a table looks perfectly clear, and every word on its label is accurate. But one drop of poison has gone in. Nobody calls it drinking water anymore. The clear look is the true-sounding words, the drop is the deceit, and the whole glass is spoiled by it.

1. Tonight, pick one thing you are doing and calling your duty. Ask whether it rests on anything you have told someone that is not fully so. 2. Tomorrow, watch your answers to questions. Notice any moment when you say something accurate in order to leave a wrong impression. 3. If you find one, say the plain version to that person in a single sentence. If speaking is not safe, write it on paper and keep it for yourself.
