Why Real Things Go Unseen

Things go unperceived through being too far, too near, through damage to the sense organ, an unsettled mind, subtlety, something in between, being overpowered, and mixture with things like them.
The question behind it is simple. If you cannot see something, does that show it is not there? Samkhya holds that it does not, and lists eight ways a real thing can escape notice. Gaudapada's commentary gives an everyday case for each. Too far: people such as Chaitra or Maitra who are away in another land. Too near: the kohl lining your own eye. A damaged sense organ: sound for the deaf, colour for the blind. An unsettled mind: a distracted person fails to take in something said plainly. Subtlety: fine particles of smoke, steam, water vapour and mist drifting in the sky. Something in between: an object behind a wall. Overpowering: planets and stars drowned out by the sun's light. Mixture with like things: a bean thrown into a heap of beans, a pigeon among pigeons. The conclusion is careful. Not perceiving a thing is not proof that it is absent. Gaudapada closes by asking which of these causes hides prakriti (nature, all that changes) and purusha (the witness, pure consciousness), and how they can be known at all.
1. Tonight, step outside after dark for five minutes and find a few stars. Stars are in the sky by day too; the sun's light overpowers them. 2. The next time you lose your glasses, check right at your eyes and face first, like glasses pushed up on your head. Too near is one of the eight. 3. In one conversation today, when you notice your mind has drifted, say so and ask the person to repeat what they said. 4. Once today, before you say 'there's nothing there', pause and run through the eight reasons.
Cognitive science would recognise most of this list. The eye has a near point inside which it cannot focus, and a limit of resolution beyond which detail vanishes. A bright light can mask a dim one. Attention matters: people regularly miss plain events when their focus is elsewhere, which psychologists call inattentional blindness, and objects packed among similar ones are harder to pick out. Physics adds that much of what is real, from atoms to radio waves, lies below what unaided senses register. Epistemology adds a caution. Absence of evidence is weak evidence of absence only when you would not expect to detect the thing anyway; where you would expect to see it, not seeing it counts. Whether unseen causes like prakriti are real remains an open question about inference, close to today's debates over scientific realism.
