Meaning · English
Bodies grown used to the rains and the cool are suddenly scorched by the sun's rays, and the pitta gathered during the rains flares up in autumn. To overcome it: ghee prepared with bitter herbs, purging and letting blood. When truly hungry, eat light food that is bitter, sweet and astringent: shali rice, mung, sugar, amla, patola, honey and the meat of dry-land animals. Water warmed all day by the sun and cooled all night by the moon, made harmless by the rising of the star Agastya, is called hamsodaka: pure, clear, overcoming impurities, neither clogging nor drying, like nectar to drink. Bright with sandalwood, ushira, camphor, pearl garlands and bright, fresh garments, enjoy from the terraces at nightfall moonlight as white as their plaster. Give up dew, alkalis, overeating, curd, oil, fat, the sun, strong liquor, day sleep and the east wind.
Sharad is the clear, hot stretch after the monsoon. Vagbhata pictures it this way. Through the rains the body grew used to cool, damp days. Meanwhile pitta, the principle of heat and transformation in the body, was quietly building up. Then the clouds part, the sun strikes bodies that are not ready for it, and that stored heat flares. Everything he advises answers heat with coolness. Bitter, sweet and astringent tastes are the ones that calm pitta. Food stays light, and comes only with real hunger; as the tradition explains, agni, the digestive fire, is still finding its strength after the heavy rains. Ghee, purging and bloodletting are a physician's measures, not home practices. The water he praises is warmed by the sun by day, cooled by moonlight at night and made harmless by Agastya's rising: clean and clear, neither clogging nor drying. The evenings belong to moonlight, fragrance and clean cloth. Curd, oil, alkalis, strong drink, harsh sun and daytime sleep all feed heat or heaviness, so they are set aside. Far from India, the same spirit fits whatever season turns from damp and cool to sudden, dry heat.
1. Today, wait until you feel real hunger before your next meal, then keep it light: rice with mung dal or a bitter green vegetable. Skip this if you need regular meals for diabetes or a similar condition. 2. Keep out of the strongest midday sun on your walk or errands; take the shaded side. 3. Drink water at room temperature, kept clean and covered. 4. After dinner, spend ten minutes outdoors or at a window in the cool evening air and moonlight. 5. Skip the afternoon nap and go to bed a little earlier instead.
Parts of this sit well with what is known today. The body takes days to a couple of weeks to acclimatise to heat, so a sudden hot spell after a cool, wet season does strain people more. Lighter meals, plenty of fluids and shade during the hottest hours are ordinary hot-weather advice. Insistence on clean, settled water matters after any monsoon, when water supplies are easily contaminated; sunlight does help disinfect water, though not reliably on its own. Pitta has no exact modern match, and there is no evidence that curd or oil raise the body's heat, or that a star's rising changes water. Short daytime naps are generally considered harmless or helpful. Bloodletting has been abandoned by mainstream medicine except in a few specific conditions, and purging is not a routine seasonal practice.
