In bodies worn down by the season of taking, agni is already low, and in the rains it sinks further. When the sky hangs heavy with water-laden clouds, the doshas are disturbed: by a misty wind, sudden and cold; by vapour rising from the earth; by muddy water that turns sour as it is digested; and by that same dull fire. Since in this season they all spoil one another, one should take everything that holds the middle way, and whatever kindles the body's warmth.

Vagbhata pictures India's year in two halves. In adana, 'the taking', from late winter through summer, sun and wind draw strength out of the body. So the rains arrive on a tired body. Agni, the digestive fire, is already low, and now it sinks further. He then names what unsettles the doshas. These are the three working forces: vata (movement), pitta (heat and change) and kapha (moisture and structure). Under skies heavy with cloud, the disturbers are a misty wind that turns cold without warning, steam off wet ground, and muddy water that sours in digestion. The weak fire itself is the last. His own reason is that in this season they all spoil one another, so no single correction is enough. Hence two rules. The first is sadharana, the middle way that suits all three doshas, with nothing extreme. The second is whatever warms and kindles agni. A reader far from India can follow the spirit through their own weather: any damp, grey, chilly stretch after a draining heat.

1. Today, eat your main meal warm and freshly cooked. Leave out anything cold from the fridge or left standing for hours. 2. Bring your drinking water to a boil, then drink it warm or at room temperature through the day. 3. On damp or windy days, keep an extra layer and dry socks with you. Change out of wet clothes as soon as you get in. 4. Eat when you are actually hungry and stop at comfortable. Do not skip meals and do not feast. Keep the middle way.

Agni maps loosely onto digestion and appetite. Many people do notice that appetite drops in heavy heat and stays sluggish for a while, and that is a familiar experience. The text's concern about muddy water fits well-established public health knowledge. Rainy seasons in hot countries bring more stomach infections from contaminated water and food. Clean water that has been boiled, and freshly cooked food, are sound advice anywhere. A sudden chill and damp make people uncomfortable, but medicine has no evidence that weather weakens digestion directly. The idea of doshas spoiling one another has no modern match. The preference for moderate, warm, simply cooked meals is reasonable general sense. Strongly heating spices can upset some stomachs. Anyone with an ongoing stomach problem is better guided by a doctor than by the season.
