Meaning · English
In summer the sun, sharp-rayed and at its sharpest, seems to draw everything in. So day by day kapha wanes, and vata grows. Therefore in this season give up salty, pungent and sour tastes, exercise, and the sun's rays. Take food that is sweet above all, light, unctuous, cool and liquid. With limbs sprinkled with very cold water, lick saktu mixed with sugar.
Vagbhata gives the hot season, grishma, a picture and a reason. At its fiercest, the summer sun seems to pull the moisture out of the world. As it does, kapha wanes a little each day. Kapha is the body's principle of moisture, weight and steadiness. Vata grows in its place. Vata is the principle of dryness, lightness and movement. So he sets aside what would dry or heat the body further: salty, pungent and sour tastes, exercise, and the sun beating on the body. In their place comes food that is sweet above all. It should also be light, unctuous (moist with a little fat), cool and liquid. He adds sprinkling the body with very cold water, and saktu, a flour of roasted grain, taken with sugar as a soft lick. Ayurveda explains elsewhere that the sweet taste rebuilds what heat wears away and settles vata. It also teaches that strength runs low in this season, which is why exercise is set aside. His summer is India's: long, blazing and dry before the rains. A reader elsewhere can follow their own hot spell rather than the calendar.
1. On a hot day, skip your usual workout in the midday heat. If you move at all, take a short, easy walk in the coolest hour of early morning or evening. 2. At lunch, choose a lighter meal with something mild and liquid, such as a thin soup, milk or soft rice. Go easy on chilli, pickles and salty snacks. 3. Between late morning and mid-afternoon, keep to the shade when you are outdoors. 4. When you come home, splash your face, arms and feet with cool water for a minute.
Much of this matches how a doctor would advise people in hot weather. Heat drains body water through sweat. Drinking enough, eating lighter meals and staying out of the strong midday sun all help prevent heat exhaustion. Avoiding hard exertion in peak heat is standard advice. Appetite often drops in heat, which fits the call for light, liquid food. Two points need care. Someone sweating heavily loses salt and may need some back, so cutting salt is not right for everyone. Very cold water on an overheated body can be a shock, and cool water is safer for the elderly, small children and anyone with heart trouble. People with diabetes should be careful with the sugar. Kapha and vata have no modern match. 'Drying' loosely maps onto dehydration.
