Meaning · English
Teachers, fathers, sons, and likewise grandfathers, maternal uncles, fathers-in-law, grandsons, brothers-in-law, and kinsmen as well.
This is a list, and the list is the point. Arjuna names the people he sees standing in the opposing army, one relation after another. Three words carry it. Acharya is a teacher, one who gives you a craft or a way of living. Pitamaha is a grandfather, literally the father's father. Sambandhin is a kinsman, someone tied to you by marriage or blood. Arjuna does not say 'the enemy'. He says teachers, fathers, sons. The sentence is unfinished here and is completed in the next verse, where he says he does not wish to kill them. His reason is that the people he would have to fight are the people who made up his life, and each name reaches further into his family. This is Arjuna's view at that moment, shaken and grieving, and not yet anything Krishna has taught. The listener is shown a man who cannot see a battlefield any more, only relatives. Shankara reads Arjuna's sorrow as coming from attachment and confusion, which Krishna's teaching will clear. Ramanuja reads it as real affection that clouds Arjuna's sight of his duty. Madhva treats the grief as the occasion that draws out the teaching meant for everyone.
Someone at a family wedding picks up the seating chart, expecting a page of strangers. Table after table, every name is an aunt, a teacher, a cousin they grew up with. Arjuna looks at the two armies the same way: what he expected to be an enemy line turns out to be a seating chart of his own family.
1. Today, before one task you are dreading, write down the names of the people it will touch, not the roles. Spend two minutes on it. 2. Notice what rises as you write each name: tenderness, dread, or both. Do not argue with it. 3. Tonight, say aloud one name from the list and one true thing you owe that person.
A man sits at his kitchen table with the papers to sell the family shop. His father started it, and his cousins are listed as co-owners. For weeks the other side was 'the cousins', a single blur. Then he reads the names aloud: the one who taught him to count change, the one who covered his shift when his daughter was born. The blur breaks into faces, and his chest tightens. That is what the verse does. Arjuna does not argue or decide here. He names, and in naming he feels the full weight of what he is about to do. Ordinary experience bears this out: a name on a page weighs more than a category. For the man at the table, the naming slows his hand and makes his reasons harder to hide. The text presents this as Arjuna's view at a low moment, and Krishna will go on to answer it. The verse does not say whether the man should sign or whether Arjuna should fight. It does not lift the grief. It only shows who is in the room.
