Meaning · English

I do not wish to kill these men, Madhusudana, even if they kill me. Not for dominion over the three worlds. How much less, then, for the earth alone?

Three words carry the weight. Hantum means to slay, and Arjuna says ichchhami, I wish, so he is speaking about his own will. He does not say he cannot fight. He says he does not want to. Madhusudana is the name he uses for Krishna, the killer of the demon Madhu. He calls on a slayer of enemies while refusing to slay. Trailokya means the three worlds, everything there is to rule, and mahi is the earth, a smaller prize. The plain sense is that Arjuna would not kill these men even if they killed him, and would not do it for rule over all three worlds, let alone for one kingdom. The argument runs from the larger to the smaller. If the greater prize cannot move him, the lesser certainly cannot. He says this because he has just looked at the men standing opposite, his teachers and elders, and the gain he came for now looks empty to him. This is Arjuna's view in a moment of grief, not Krishna's teaching. The commentators read the passage as the start of the problem, not its answer. Shankara and Ramanuja both take Arjuna's collapse as attachment and sorrow clouding his judgment, which Krishna's teaching will address. Madhva holds that Arjuna's confusion serves the lesson that follows.

A man is offered the deed to a whole city, on one condition: he must pull down the house he grew up in, with his people still inside. He refuses the city. Then he is asked about a single field. Arjuna argues the same way: if the largest prize cannot buy this act, the smaller one cannot either.

1. Tonight, sit for five minutes and name one thing you would refuse to do even for a very large reward. 2. Write down who it would cost, by name. 3. Next time a hard task fills you with dread this week, notice where it sits in your body, whether chest, stomach or throat, and just note it for a minute before acting.

A woman stands at the gate of the old family house. A buyer has offered more money than she has ever seen, and her two aunts still live inside. Her brother says everyone sells eventually. She cannot make the sum feel like a reason. The verse shows what Arjuna does in a moment like this. He does not argue about the price. He asks whether any price would be enough, and finds that it would not. Reasoning from the larger prize to the smaller, he tests his reluctance against the biggest offer he can imagine and sees that it holds. The woman can do the same, setting the cheque aside and asking what she would still refuse if it were doubled. Her answer tells her whether the hesitation is fear or a real limit. Ordinary experience agrees that a heavy decision weighs on the body before the mind has words for it. That feeling is worth hearing out. The verse does not say Arjuna is right, and it does not settle her choice. It does not take away the grief of choosing, or the cost of either path. It only shows a person refusing to let a prize decide for them.
