Plan Ahead for Rest

Mahabharata, Udyoga Parva 35.41

Meaning · English

Do in the day the work that lets you spend the night in comfort. Do in the eight dry months the work that lets you spend the rainy season in comfort.

Vidura speaks of two stretches of time and one habit. The night is the short stretch. The rainy season is the long one. Each is a time when work stops and you live on what you prepared earlier. The verse asks for work now that pays off later. Two ideas carry it. Kartavya, what is to be done, comes from the root kr, to do or make. Sukha, comfort or ease, is literally a good space, where things move freely. Together they say: make the work today produce a good space tomorrow. The clauses run in order. First, daytime work should be chosen with the night in mind. Second, the eight months should be used with the monsoon in mind. Nothing is dropped, and the two halves repeat one rule at two scales. Vidura says this to a king who cannot sleep. Dhritarashtra lies awake because of what he did and did not do while he had the time. Vidura's point is that a restless night is often the bill for a careless day. Nilakantha's commentary is not needed to read this one plainly. The reason given is simple: ask what an act will leave you with, before you begin it.

Before winter, a family stacks firewood, patches the roof and fills the grain jar while the weather is still kind. In January they sit warm and fed. Each task felt small in October, but it was written for a cold night they could not yet feel. The day's work is the woodpile, and the sleepless night or the rainy season is the winter it was stacked for.

1. Tonight, before bed, notice how the evening feels: rested, or unsettled by something left undone. 2. Tomorrow morning, pick one task and ask what it will leave you with tonight. Choose it with that in mind. 3. Before starting, say aloud who it is for and what it is meant to achieve. Take under a minute. 4. This week, choose one larger task, such as a repair, a letter or a bill, and do a small piece of it now, for the sake of a later season.
