Wrongful Gain, Widening Hole
Mahabharata, Udyoga Parva 35.43
Meaning · English
A gap that someone tries to fill with wealth taken wrongly stays open. Meanwhile other gaps break open in other places.
The verse turns on two ideas. Chidra is a hole, a crack, a weak spot: a lack, a debt, a failing, a place where things leak. Anyayopatta is wealth got by unfair means, from a root sense of 'not by the proper way.' The text teaches that a person who patches a lack with wrongful money has not mended it. The hole stays uncovered. Worse, new holes open elsewhere. The wrong itself becomes a fresh weakness: a broken trust, a fear of being found out, an enemy, a household that learns the habit. Vidura says this to Dhritarashtra, a king who cannot sleep. The king wants his sons secure and is willing to gain by crooked means to get there. Vidura answers that the plan defeats itself. Looking at the act, the one who does it and the purpose it serves, he points out that a good purpose cannot be served by a crooked act, and the doer ends up more exposed than before. Nilakantha's commentary is not drawn on here, so no reading is claimed for him. The reason given is plain: the cost of the method outruns what the method buys.
Picture a leaking boat patched with a strip of wet cloth. The cloth covers one crack, then the water finds a seam beside it, then another. You keep patching and the hull keeps weakening. The cloth is wealth got wrongly, and the spreading leaks are the new troubles it creates around the old lack.
1. Tonight, name one lack you feel pressed to fill: money, standing, a deadline, an apology owed. 2. Write down the quickest way to fill it. Beside it, ask whether anyone would be harmed or misled by that way. 3. If the quick way is crooked, list the new problems it might open, such as someone you would have to avoid, or a story you would have to keep straight. 4. Sleep on it before acting, and note in the morning whether the straight way looks slower but cleaner.
