Scripture, direct sight, tradition and inference: these are the four means of knowing. Since none of them stands on firm ground, the wise one turns away from the endless branching of imagined alternatives. Because actions bring only change, everything from the world of Brahma downward is inauspicious. The discerning one should look on even the unseen, such as heavens, as perishable, just as he looks on what is seen.
Krishna names the four ways people come to know things: hearing scripture (shruti), seeing for oneself (pratyaksha), received tradition (aitihya) and reasoning (anumana). Together they are the pramanas, from ma, to measure. His claim is that none of them gives the mind a place to rest for good. Each can be questioned, and the questioning splits into rival possibilities. That splitting is vikalpa, from vi, apart, and klp, to arrange or imagine. From it, he says, the wise one is virajyate: the colour goes out of it, the same root as vairagya, dispassion. The second half turns to deeds. Actions produce results, and results change and pass. So everything reachable by action, up to the highest heavens of Brahma, carries a flaw: it does not last. Krishna then asks the discerning person to treat the unseen worlds, which no eye has checked, as perishable just as plainly as the seen ones. The reason it is taught here is that Krishna is listing what loosens the grip of the world, so that knowledge can follow. The commentators generally read the verse as a turning away from the world, not a dismissal of scripture. It asks the listener to stop expecting any proof or reward to be the final ground.
A traveller crossing a flooded field steps from brick to brick, and each brick shifts a little under him. He can keep going, but he stops trusting any one brick to be the shore. The four proofs and the rewards of action are the bricks; the shore lies somewhere else.
1. Tonight, pick one decision you are turning over and write down the four things you are relying on: something you read or were told, something you saw, what people usually say, and your own reasoning. 2. Next to each, write one way it could be wrong. 3. Choose anyway, and notice whether the choice feels lighter when you stop asking any single source to settle it.
A man sits in his parked car outside a house he is thinking of buying. The agent has promised the area is quiet. A neighbour has hinted about damp. His own eyes saw fresh paint over one wall, and his sums say he can just afford it. He feels the pull of each source in turn. The verse would change the moment in steps. He sees that each of the four is partial and may shift when new facts arrive. He holds his conclusion loosely and asks one more question, such as who last lived there. He also remembers that even a good purchase is a thing that will age and wear. Ordinary experience confirms that a certainty built on one source often dissolves when another arrives. Krishna's teaching is that the mind is freed from the restlessness, not that the choice is made for him. It does not tell him whether to buy, it does not remove the risk, and it is no substitute for a surveyor or a lawyer where one is needed.
