Krishna says to Uddhava: I told you the yoga of devotion before, because you are dear to me and without fault. I will tell it again, and this time the highest cause of devotion to me. Faith in the nectar of my stories. Constant telling of my praises. Steady devotion in worship, and praising me with hymns. Respect in service, and bowing with every limb. Worship of my devotees, which goes beyond all of these. And the thought of me in every being.
Three words carry this teaching. Bhakti comes from the root bhaj, to share in: devotion is taking part in someone, not only admiring them. Shraddha is faith in the old sense of trust placed in something, here in the stories of Krishna, which he calls amrita, nectar. Kirtana is telling aloud, speaking of him again and again. Krishna first reminds Uddhava that he has already taught this yoga. He teaches it again because he now gives its cause: what makes devotion arise. He names a list of ordinary acts. He asks for trust in the stories, praise spoken often, steadiness in worship, hymns, willing service, and a full bow with the whole body. Then he sets two things above the rest. One is worship of those who are devoted to him. The other is the settled thought of him in every being. The order matters. The acts begin with hearing and speaking and end with seeing him in everyone, so devotion is meant to widen from the temple to the street. He says it to Uddhava because Uddhava is dear to him and blameless, and because the teaching just before this one was about knowing and letting go. Krishna now tells him where love comes from. Sridhara Svami's commentary and the others take these as the means by which bhakti is born, not as its results. Krishna asks Uddhava to practise these things, not merely understand them.
A footpath across a field is not built. People walk the same line each morning until the grass gives way and the earth shows. Hearing, praising, bowing and serving are those steps. Repeated daily, they wear a clear way to the one they are all directed toward.
1. Today, for five minutes, say aloud or read a short story or a few lines about Krishna, slowly, as you would tell news you were glad of. 2. Before eating, bow once, fully, with your head lowered, and say one line of praise to him. 3. Pick one person who serves you, such as a driver, a cook or a cleaner, and thank them by name, looking at them. 4. At night, note one moment when you remembered Krishna in another person.
A retired schoolteacher sits at a crowded wedding feast. A tired young man keeps filling her plate, and she hardly looks up from her phone. Her mind is on the speeches and her place in the row. The verse would change that moment by small steps. She would look at his face once. She would say a word of thanks and mean it. She would remember that, in Krishna's teaching, he is present in this stranger as much as in the shrine. Respect shown in service and a bow of the body come first. The thought of Krishna in every being is where that practice is meant to end, and it comes after the habit, not before it. Ordinary experience agrees on one point: repeated courtesy and gratitude soften the person who practises them, even when they begin as habit. The verse does not promise that she will feel anything in that moment. It does not remove her tiredness or her worries, and it does not claim that a bow settles a quarrel or heals an illness. It asks only that she begin with the acts.
