Let the body's work be done for me. Let the voice speak of my qualities. Let the mind be laid in me, and every craving let go. Let wealth be given up for my sake, and let enjoyment and pleasure be given up for my sake too. Whatever is sacrificed, given, offered in fire, repeated in prayer, whatever vow or austerity is kept, let it be for me. For people who hand themselves over to me by these ways of living, devotion to me is born. What other purpose is left for them?
Three Sanskrit words open this up. Arpana means offering: to place something before another, not to throw it away. Sarvakama-vivarjana means giving up all cravings. Vivarjana is a turning away, as when you stop going down a road. Atmanivedin is one who has handed himself over. The root is vid, to make known, so it is someone who has laid himself open and said, here I am. Bhakti, loving devotion, comes from bhaj, to share in. Now the clauses. Krishna lists the parts of a person: hands and feet, voice, mind, money, comforts. Work is done for him. Speech goes to telling of his qualities. The mind is set in him, and its cravings are given up. Wealth is spent for him. Pleasure is set aside for his sake. Then come the formal practices: sacrifice, gifts, offerings in fire, repeated prayer, vows, austerity. All of it is to be for him. Why say this here? Krishna has just described what makes devotion arise, and Uddhava needs to see what it looks like in a whole life. Krishna's answer is that nothing is cut out. The same days, with a different direction. The last question is his own: for such a person, what other aim remains? The commentators take this to mean that devotion is the goal itself. Once it is born, there is nothing further to seek.
Picture a house the day a dear guest is expected. The same sweeping, shopping, cooking and letter-writing go on, but each errand now has a face at the end of it. The guest is Krishna. The ordinary work of a life stays the same, and what changes is who it is for.
1. Choose one ordinary task today, such as washing dishes, a walk, or answering a message. Before starting, say silently, "This is for Krishna." 2. Do it at your usual pace and notice whether your care for it changes. 3. Once today, say one true good thing about him aloud or in your head, even a single sentence. 4. At night, name one small pleasure you set aside or shared for his sake.
A man sits by his father's hospital bed at two in the morning. There is nothing to cure and nothing to decide. His phone glows, his mind runs through bills, and he feels useless. The verse gives that hour a shape, step by step. His hands fetch water and straighten the blanket, and he does it as work given to Krishna instead of as filler. His voice, if he speaks, tells of what is good in his father, or of Krishna's qualities. His mind, pulled toward worry about money, has one place to be set down. The comfort he gave up, his sleep, becomes a gift and not only a loss. The text's own claim is that such living gives birth to devotion. Ordinary experience adds only that a tired person with a single clear purpose usually scatters less than one pulled in ten directions. The limit is plain. This does not cure his father, remove his grief, or take the place of the doctors and nurses. It does not promise the night will feel light. It says only where the night's work is offered.
