Meaning · English
Among the Vedas I am Hiranyagarbha, who first spoke them. Among sacred formulas I am the threefold Om. Among letters I am the sound A, and among metres the three-footed Gayatri. Among all the gods I am Indra. Among the Vasus I am Agni, who carries the offerings to the gods. Among the Adityas I am Vishnu. Among the Rudras I am Nilalohita, the blue-and-red one.
Krishna goes on naming where he is to be seen: the best of each kind. Hiranyagarbha, the golden womb, is the first-born creator, here named as the one who gave out the Vedas. Om is called trivrit, threefold, because the commentators hear in it three sounds, a, u and m. The A is the first sound of the alphabet and the one an open mouth makes before shaping anything. The commentators read the metre as the Gayatri, with its three feet. Next come the gods. Indra is chief of the gods. Agni, called havyavah, the carrier of offerings, is the fire that takes the sacrifice up to them. Vishnu is the best of the twelve Adityas, and Nilalohita, a name of Shiva, the best of the Rudras. The list answers an old question: where can a mind find him? Krishna has just said, in the earlier verses, that he is the self and the source of all beings. These verses give the mind places to look. Wherever something is first, highest or purest in its class, Krishna says that is where his presence shows most plainly. Uddhava is shown a way to see, not a ranking of gods to quarrel over.
From a train window, a long range of hills slides past. In each range one peak stands highest, and the eye goes to it and then notices the rest. Krishna's list works the same way: the first, the highest and the purest in each kind are the peaks where the eye can find him.
1. Tomorrow morning, say the sound A aloud once, slowly, with your mouth open. Notice that every other letter is shaped from it. 2. Light a lamp or a candle for a minute and watch the flame carry its smoke upward. That is what the text means by the carrier of offerings. 3. Before sleep, name one thing you saw today that was the very best of its kind, and say so quietly.
A young mother sits up at three in the morning with a baby who will not settle. Between cries comes a long open sound, aaa, the first one most babies make. She is tired and half-annoyed, and nothing about the hour feels holy. The verse puts the first sound a mouth makes among the places Krishna says he can be found. For the length of that sound, the room is not just a nursery in the dark. The teaching also names fire that carries offerings and gods ranked by their kind. Her hands still rock the baby, and the night is still long. Ordinary experience does confirm one small thing: a mind that has stopped to notice one good thing is a little steadier than one counting its own tiredness. The verse does not promise that the baby will sleep, that tiredness will lift, or that a doctor is unneeded if the baby is unwell. It offers a way of hearing the ordinary sound, and the text gives that way as Krishna's teaching.
