Meaning · English
Among the sages born of Brahma, I am Bhrigu. Among royal sages, I am Manu. Among the sages of the gods, I am Narada. Among cows, I am the cow of the sacred offering. Among the perfected masters, I am Kapila. Among birds, I am Suparna. Among the lords of creatures, I am Daksha. Among the ancestors, I am Aryaman.
Krishna goes on naming his glories to Uddhava, the best of each kind. A glory, vibhuti, is a place where his power goes forth and shows plainly. A rishi is a seer, and Krishna sorts the seers three ways: the brahmarshi, a seer of priestly birth, where he is Bhrigu; the rajarshi, a king who is also a seer, where he is Manu; and the devarshi, a seer among the gods, where he is Narada. Next come the offering-cow, whose milk feeds the sacred fire, and Kapila, first among the siddhas, the perfected ones. He is Suparna among birds, Daksha among the lords of creatures, and Aryaman among the ancestors. The commentators take each name as a doorway: the finest of every kind shows most clearly what stands behind all of it. Krishna gives these because Uddhava needs a way to recognise him in a world full of things. Nothing here is a power to be gained. These are places to look, and they ask the listener to see the greatest in each kind as pointing past itself to him.
On a festival night, every window along a lane holds a lamp. The lamps differ in shape and size, and the brightest ones draw the eye first. Yet all of them are one fire borrowed from another. The best of each kind is such a window, and Krishna is the flame in it.
1. Tonight, pick three kinds of thing: a bird, a teacher, an animal you know. For each, name the finest example you have seen. 2. Spend one minute on each, asking what in it you admire most: its steadiness, its generosity, its flight. 3. Say quietly: "This shows something of Krishna." Then go back to your evening without adding more.
A grandfather sits on a hospital bench while his small grandson, bored and frightened, asks where God is. He has no answer ready. The verse gives him a way to begin. He can point to the sparrow on the window ledge, to the cow the family has always kept, to the old teacher the boy admires. He can say that Krishna, in the Uddhava Gita, names the finest of each kind as the places where he is plainest to see. The boy now has something to look for in the ward and outside it, and the waiting hour turns into a small walk of noticing. Ordinary experience agrees on one point: we do learn what a thing is by looking at its best example, not its average one. The teaching does not promise that the boy's mother will recover, and it does not replace the doctors down the corridor. It gives a frightened child something steady to look at while the adults wait.
