Meaning · English

Know me, Uddhava, as Prahlada among the daityas, lord of the asuras. Among the stars and the healing herbs I am the moon. Among the yakshas and rakshasas I am Kubera, lord of wealth. Among lordly elephants I am Airavata. Among the creatures of the waters I am Varuna, their master. Among those that give heat and light I am the sun, and among men I am the king.

Two words carry the verse. Vibhuti means glory or splendour, from bhu, to be, with vi, spread out: being shown in many forms. Bhupati means lord of the earth, a king: bhu is earth, pati is master. Krishna tells Uddhava to look at each kind of being and find its best. Among the daityas, the sons of Diti who fight the gods, he names Prahlada. Prahlada is the demon's son who stayed loyal to God, so the best of a kind is not always the strongest. Among stars and herbs it is the moon, which in this tradition rules the herbs. Among yakshas and rakshasas it is Kubera, keeper of wealth. Among great elephants it is Airavata. Among water-dwellers it is Varuna. Among things that burn and shine it is the sun. Among men it is the king. Uddhava has asked how to find Krishna in a world of countless things, and this is the answer: do not search everywhere, look at the peak of each kind. The commentators read the list as handholds, so a mind that cannot grasp the whole can hold one thing at a time. The verse asks the listener to look for the source of the splendour, not to worship the splendid thing itself.

At dusk, every window on a street glows from the same wire running down the lane. The brightest window is the one you notice first, and it tells you the current is there. The best of each kind is that window, and Krishna is the current behind all of them.

1. Pick one kind of thing near you today: the trees on your road, the birds, the people at your work. 2. Ask which one stands out as the finest of its kind, and look at it for one full minute. 3. Say quietly, "This splendour is borrowed from Krishna." 4. In the evening, when the moon or a lamp is lit, do the same once more.

A woman walks to the well at first light, tired and already counting the day's tasks. The sun clears the rooftops and she stops for a moment. Ordinary experience says what happens next: the list loosens a little, because her eyes have gone to something larger than the list. The verse would carry that moment one step further. She sees the sun, then the heat and light it gives to every field. Krishna, in the text's teaching, is the splendour in that sun, so what she is looking at is already a way to him. Later, passing a king's portrait, a strong ox or a clean stream, she would meet the same invitation in a smaller form. The limit is plain: seeing the sun this way does not lighten the day's work, mend a sorrow or replace a doctor when the body is ill. It offers a place for her attention to rest and a name to give what she sees.
