Meaning · English
Among horses I am Uchchaihshrava; among metals, gold. Among those who hold others in check, I am Yama. Among serpents I am Vasuki, and among the great nagas, Ananta. Among beasts with horns and fangs, I am the lion. Among the stages of life I am the fourth, and among the classes, the first. So know me, sinless one.
Krishna goes on naming the best of each kind, and this run mixes things we admire with things we fear. Uchchaihshrava is the king of horses, born at the churning of the ocean. Gold is the metal that does not rust. Yama, the god of death, appears among samyamatam, those who restrain; the word comes from sam and yam, to hold in check. Yama holds every being to its appointed end. Vasuki and Ananta are the foremost serpents. Ananta, whose name means endless, is the great serpent on whom Vishnu rests. The lion is first among animals that have horns or fangs. Then Krishna turns from creatures to the order of human life. The turya is the fourth ashrama, the stage of renunciation, from a word meaning fourth. The first varna is the first of the four classes, the brahmins. He ends by calling Uddhava anagha, one without fault. The question behind the list is where Uddhava can find Krishna in a world he is about to leave behind. Krishna answers that he is present in the finest of each kind, including the dreaded ones. Nothing here asks the listener to rank people or worship horses. The commentators read such lists as pointers. The best of anything leads the mind back to its source.
A painter signs the corner of many canvases: a calm sea, a portrait, a storm. The signature does not turn the canvas into the painter, but it tells whose hand made it. Each best-of-its-kind in the list is such a corner, and Krishna says whose name is written there.
1. Today, notice one thing you would call the best of its kind: a ripe fruit, a steady neighbour, a sharp knife. 2. Say aloud, in one sentence, what makes it the best. 3. Stay with it for one slow breath, remembering that Krishna names such excellence as his own. 4. Do the same this week with one thing that frightens or humbles you, such as a storm, a fierce dog or a stern elder.
A mother stands with her small son at the lion enclosure. He grips her hand, half hiding, half staring. She could say only that it is dangerous and move on. Instead she lets him look, and says it is the strongest animal here, and that the glass is thick. Step by step: his fear is not scolded away. It is given something to rest on, since the lion is admired as well as feared. His breathing slows, and his eyes stay on the animal. Ordinary experience confirms that fear shrinks a little when we can look steadily and name what we see. Krishna teaches that the lion, the serpent and even Yama carry his presence, and that the frightening and the admirable are not separate in him. The limit is plain. The verse does not make a lion safe or take away dread of death. The glass stays thick, and a real danger still needs real caution.
