Meaning · English

Among holy places and flowing waters I am the Ganga; among still waters, the ocean. Among weapons I am the bow, and among those who carry bows, the destroyer of Tripura. Among seats and dwellings I am Mount Meru; among places hard to enter, the Himalaya. Among trees I am the peepal, and among grains and herbs, barley.

Krishna keeps naming the best of each class and saying that he is that. Here he takes water first. Among tirthas, holy crossing places, and flowing rivers, he is the Ganga. The word tirtha means a ford, a place where one crosses over. Among still waters he is the ocean. Among weapons he is the bow, and among bow-bearers he is Shiva, the one who destroyed the three demon cities. Among dhishnyas, seats or dwelling places, he is Meru, the golden mountain at the centre of the world in this tradition. Among gahanas, deep and hard-to-enter places, he is the Himalaya. Among trees he is the ashvattha, the peepal. Among grains and herbs he is yava, barley. The commentators read each pair as a signpost: the finest of a class is where his presence shows most plainly. Uddhava has just heard about the siddhis, the powers of yoga, and Krishna has told him they are a waste of time for anyone seeking him. These glories are the other half of that teaching. They give the mind something real to hold instead of powers: rivers, mountains, a tree, a grain. They ask Uddhava to look at the world he already knows and see where the best of it points.

At a fruit market each stall puts its best mango on top, in the light. A buyer who sees it trusts the whole crate. The Ganga, the bow, the mountain and the barley are those top pieces, and they point back to the one who fills the crate.

1. Today, when you pour a glass of water, hold it for ten seconds and think of the river it began as. 2. On a walk this week, choose one tree, a peepal if you can find one, and look at it for a full minute. 3. At a meal, notice the grain on your plate, whether barley, rice or wheat, and name where it grew before you eat.

A man sits on a night train with his mother's ashes in a small pot on his lap. The train crosses a wide river on a bridge. He has not slept, and his thoughts run to forms, dates and who will come to the ceremony. The verse speaks to that moment by giving him something larger than the errands. He looks down at the water, and in Krishna's teaching the river is one of the places where Krishna is most easily found. His grief does not leave, but it has a place to rest for the length of the bridge. Next, the verse turns his eye from the paperwork to the ordinary things around him, such as the water, the hills beyond it and the grain in the fields. Ordinary experience bears this out in a small way: standing before a big river or a mountain does make a private worry seem smaller. The verse does not promise that this will lessen his loss, or that any river will take it away. It offers him a way to look at what is in front of him.
