Glory in Vows and Purity
Bhagavata Purana 11.16.22
Meaning · English
Among household priests I am Vasishtha; among knowers of Brahman, Brihaspati. Among generals I am Skanda; among those who walk in front, the lord Brahma, the unborn. Among sacrifices I am the sacrifice of Vedic study; among vows, non-harming. Among purifiers I am the purifier: wind, fire, sun, water, speech and the self.
Krishna goes on with his list of glories, the vibhutis. In each kind of thing he names the best. Three words carry the verse. Brahmayajna is the offering of Vedic study and recitation, where the gift is learning itself instead of grain or ghee. Avihimsana is non-harming: a means not, himsa means injury. Shuci is purity, what cleans. The first lines name guides. Vasishtha is the model household priest, Brihaspati the model teacher of those who know Brahman. Skanda is the model commander, and Brahma, the unborn, is the model of those who lead from the front. Next come practices. Among sacrifices Krishna is the study of the sacred word, and among vows he is the refusal to harm any living being. Last come the purifiers: wind, fire, sun, water, speech and the self. Krishna says he is the purifier among them, the pure one among the pure. The list answers Uddhava's wish to see where Krishna can be found. Krishna does not point to something far off. He points to the best of what Uddhava already knows. The commentators take these peaks as the places where his presence is easiest to see. The verse asks Uddhava to recognise him in them, and it offers no power to be gained.
A lamp placed in a dark hall lights the whole room, yet people find their way by looking at the flame. The best priest, the plainest vow and the cleanest water are like that flame. Krishna points to each as the brightest place where he can be seen.
1. Choose one vow of non-harming for today, such as no sharp word to anyone at home, and keep it until bedtime. 2. When you wash your hands or face this morning, take one slow minute. Notice the water on your skin. 3. Read aloud one verse or one page you value, quietly, for five minutes. 4. At night, note the moment the vow was hardest to keep.
A woman stands at the kitchen sink at six in the morning. Her son has spilled milk again, and sharp words are already rising in her throat. She is tired and the day has barely started. The verse offers three small things here. Water is named among the purifiers, so she washes her hands slowly and lets the pause stand between the spill and her reply. The vow of non-harming is named as a glory, so she asks one plain question: will this sentence hurt him or help him? Speech is also named, so she picks a few quiet words and says them. Ordinary experience confirms that a short pause often changes what a person says next. Washing hands with soap is also a sound habit for health, and doctors recommend it. The verse does not promise that she will feel calm, or that the milk will stop spilling. It does not settle a long quarrel or replace rest. It gives her one vow to hold for one morning.
