Stilled Mind, Sound Counsel

Bhagavata Purana 11.16.24

Meaning · English

Among the yogas I am the holding of the mind in check. Among those who wish to win, I am counsel. Among skills I am knowledge of the self. Among those who argue over theories of knowing, I am the weighing of alternatives. Among women I am Shatarupa; among men, Svayambhuva Manu. Among sages I am Narayana, and among those who keep celibacy, Kumara.

Four words carry the first half. Atmasamrodha: atma is self or mind, and samrodha is a complete holding back, so the whole mind is gathered and not allowed to run. Mantra comes from man, to think, and here means counsel, a plan thought through. Anvikshiki comes from anu and iksh, to look along after something; the commentators take it as the inquiry that looks into the self. Vikalpa is alternatives, the mind turning between 'it is this' and 'it is that'. Krishna tells Uddhava that among yogas he is the stilling of the mind. Among people bent on winning, he is good counsel, because a plan wins more than force does. Among skills he is the knowledge of the self. Among debaters, each defending a different theory of how we know, he is the play of alternatives itself. Then come persons. Among women he is Shatarupa, and among men Svayambhuva Manu, the first of the Manus. Among sages he is Narayana, and among lifelong celibates, Kumara. He lists these because Uddhava needs somewhere to look. Krishna points to the best of each kind and says that excellence is where he can be recognised. What he asks of Uddhava is to see the highest in each field as pointing back to him.

A canal lock holds its gates shut so the water settles and the boat can rise to the next level. Nothing is lost by the holding. The stilled mind is that lock, and Krishna names the settled water as his own.

1. Choose one ordinary task today, such as writing a message or washing dishes, and give it five minutes with no switching to anything else. 2. When your attention wanders, notice where it went, then bring it back without scolding yourself. 3. Before one real decision this week, ask one person you trust for counsel and listen to the end before answering.

A man sits in a hospital corridor while his relatives argue over whether to agree to an operation for his father. His thoughts jump between fear, blame and half-remembered advice. The verse puts two things in front of him. The first is the holding in of the mind, which Krishna calls his own among yogas. For the man this is a few slow breaths and a pause before speaking, so that one question can be asked at a time. The second is counsel. He asks the surgeon what happens with and without the operation, and he listens to the whole answer. Ordinary experience agrees that a calmer mind hears more and a plan made with advice has fewer holes. The limit is plain. A steadier mind does not change the diagnosis, does not make the decision easy, and does not replace the doctor's judgement. It only lets him take part in the decision with his own attention.
