Among duties I am renunciation. Among forms of well-being I am the mind that does not turn outward. Among secrets I am truthful, pleasing speech, and silence. Among pairs I am the Unborn. Among the beings who never blink I am the year. Among the seasons I am the two spring months. Among months I am Margashirsha, and among the stars, Abhijit.
Krishna keeps naming the best of each kind, and says that best is him. Four words carry the first half. Sannyasa is renunciation, from words meaning to lay down completely: setting the load down, not hurling it away. Abahirmati is a mind not turned outward, one that stops running after things and finds its good within. Sunrta is speech that is both true and kind. Mauna is silence, from the word for a muni, a sage who keeps quiet. Krishna calls these 'secrets', meaning things few people practise or understand. He says that among all duties, laying down is his; among all kinds of well-being, an inward-turned mind is his; among all hidden practices, true and gentle speech and silence are his. Then the list moves to the world. Among pairs he is the Unborn, and the commentators read this as Brahma, the creator. Among the gods, who do not blink, he is the year, the turning that holds all time. Among seasons he is spring, among months Margashirsha, among stars Abhijit. The reason for the list, as in the chapters around it, is Uddhava's wish to know where Krishna can be found. Krishna answers that wherever something is the finest of its kind, his presence is there. The listener is asked to see him in quiet things as much as in grand ones.
A traveller reaches the end of a long road and sets a heavy bag down by a doorway. The shoulders drop and the breath slows. Renunciation, as Krishna names it, is that setting down: the load is put down because the journey's purpose has been met, and nothing is thrown away in anger.
1. Choose one conversation today, perhaps at a meal, where you feel a sharp remark rising. 2. Stay silent for the length of three slow breaths before answering. 3. Then say only what is true and kind, or nothing at all. 4. At night, name one thing you carried all day that you could set down, and notice how it felt to name it.
A man sits at a wedding feast when his brother brings up an old money quarrel across the table. His jaw tightens and a true but cruel sentence is ready. The verse would change the moment in steps. He notices the tightening. He lets a few breaths pass before speaking. He asks whether what he is about to say is both true and kind. If it is not, he keeps quiet and lets the topic wait for a calmer hour. Ordinary experience confirms that words said in heat usually make the quarrel larger, and that a pause lets the body settle enough to choose. Krishna teaches that silence and gentle truthful speech are his own presence among secrets; the reader is asked to treat them with that regard. The verse does not settle the debt, and it does not make the brother fair. It does not ask for silence where a real wrong needs to be spoken of or reported. It offers a way to meet the moment without adding harm.
