Meaning · English

Among the ages I am the first, the Krita. Among the steady and wise I am Asita Devala. Among the many Vyasas I am Dvaipayana. Among poets I am Kavya, the one who is master of himself. Among those called Bhagavan I am Vasudeva, and among devotees, Uddhava, it is you. Among the Kimpurushas I am Hanuman, and among the Vidyadharas I am Sudarshana.

Three words carry most of it. Dhira means steady, wise: someone whose mind does not shake when things shake around them. Atmavan means one who has possession of himself, a person who is not dragged about by his own moods. Bhagavata means one who belongs to Bhagavan, a devotee, a person whose life is held by God. Krishna goes through his list. Krita is the first of the four ages, the one named for completeness. Asita Devala is his example of the steady sage. Dvaipayana is Vyasa, who arranged the Vedas and composed the Puranas. Kavya is a poet-sage, whom the commentators take as Ushanas, known for his wisdom. Krishna then says that among beings worthy of the name Bhagavan he is Vasudeva, and among devotees he names Uddhava, the friend he is speaking to. Hanuman is his example among the Kimpurushas, and Sudarshana among the Vidyadharas. The reason for the list is the one Krishna gives throughout the chapter. Uddhava has asked where he can find Krishna in a world full of beings. Krishna answers that wherever something reaches its best, there his presence is easiest to recognise. Naming Uddhava among devotees tells him that devotion itself is one of these places.

At dusk the last sunlight lands on one peak in each range along a valley, and each of them glows. The sun is not any of the peaks. The glowing ones are where you can see it most plainly. Krishna names the finest of each kind in the same way, as the places where he shows most clearly.

1. Tonight, take five minutes and think of one person you know who stays steady when things go wrong. Notice what exactly they do. 2. Think of one person who keeps you close to what you hold dear. Tell them so this week, in a message or in person. 3. Next time you admire someone's skill or goodness, pause for a breath and let the admiration be complete, without comparing yourself.

A young man stands at his old teacher's retirement party. He has been asked to say a few words, and he has nothing ready. He could praise the teacher in general terms. Instead he thinks of one afternoon when a student cried over a failed test and the teacher stayed calm and sat with him. That is a particular thing, and it is what he says. The verse works the same way. Krishna does not say that goodness exists. He points to Asita Devala for steadiness, Vyasa for arranging sacred knowledge, Hanuman for devotion in action, and Uddhava himself for love of God. In the text's teaching, these are places where Krishna's presence shows. Ordinary experience agrees that we learn more from a named person than from a list of virtues. The verse does not promise the young man the teacher's steadiness, and it does not take away the sadness of a farewell. It only teaches him where to look, and to look at someone near him.
