Meaning · English

Among jewels I am the ruby. Among lovely things I am the lotus bud. Among grasses I am kusha, the sacred grass. Among offerings I am ghee from the cow. Among those who strive I am good fortune, and among cheats I am the gambler's trickery. Among the patient I am patience, and among the good I am goodness itself.

Krishna goes on naming, for Uddhava, the finest thing in each class. Three words carry most of it. Lakshmi is fortune, the luck and prosperity that gathers around steady effort. Titiksha is forbearance, from a root for enduring: taking heat, cold, insult and delay without being knocked over. Sattva is goodness, from sat, what is; it means clarity and calm, the quality that lets things be seen as they are. The clauses run in order. Of jewels, the ruby. Of lovely things, the lotus bud. Of grasses, the kusha used at rites. Of offerings poured into the sacred fire, ghee from the cow. Of people who work hard at their aims, the fortune that comes to them. Of cheats, the cunning of the gambler. Of the patient, patience. Of the good, goodness. The cheat is the line a reader may trip on. Krishna does not praise cheating. The commentators read him as naming the power that works in every class, even a bad one, and not approving how it is used. The reason for the list is Uddhava's need. He is about to lose Krishna's visible presence. Krishna teaches him where to find him afterwards: in whatever is highest in each kind. What this asks of Uddhava is recognition. When he meets a best, he can know whose it is.

Picture a market where hundreds of different paintings hang, and in the corner of each one is the same small signature. The ruby, the lotus bud, the patient person and even the gambler's skill are different canvases. Krishna is the one hand whose mark sits on the finest of each.

1. Today, pick one kind of thing you meet: a fruit at the market, a person at work, a piece of cloth. 2. Ask which one of them is the best of its kind, and look at it for a full minute. 3. Do the same once with a quality in a person near you, such as patience or goodness. Notice it quietly. 4. In the evening, recall what you saw, and say its name aloud: ruby, patience, goodness.

A grandmother sits on a station platform. Her train is five hours late, the bench is hard, and her grandson keeps asking how much longer. Her temper is thin, and she can feel it going. The verse gives her something to do with that moment. She can stop treating patience as a chore and look at it as the very thing Krishna names as his own, the forbearance of the forbearing. She can see it in the grandson's small waiting, and in the porter who has stood on this platform since dawn. Her own effort to stay gentle then becomes one more instance of what the text calls his glory, and the wait has a different weight. Ordinary experience confirms that tiredness and hunger make patience harder, so a drink of water and a seat help as much as a thought. The verse does not shorten the wait or remove her tiredness. It does not make the late train less annoying. It gives her a way of seeing the quality she is reaching for.
