Meaning · English
Among the strong, know me as their vigor, their endurance and their bodily force. Among those devoted to me, I am their work. Of their nine forms of worship, I am the first form, the supreme. Among the singers and dancers of heaven, I am Vishvavasu and Purvachitti. Among mountains, I am their stillness. Of the earth, I am its own fragrance, and nothing added.
Krishna goes on telling Uddhava where to look for him. Three words describe strength. Ojas is the vigor that keeps a body and its senses working. Sahas is the power to endure and press on. Bala is plain force. The commentators read them as different kinds of strength, and Krishna claims all three as himself. Next come the sattvatas, the devotees. Karma means their work, and Krishna says he is the work itself, not only its reward. Adimurti, the first form, is named among the nine forms the devotees worship. The commentators list them as Vasudeva, Sankarshana, Pradyumna, Aniruddha, Narayana, Hayagriva, Varaha, Nrisimha and Brahma. Krishna calls himself the source from which the others come. Vishvavasu and Purvachitti are a chief singer and a chief dancer of the heavenly courts. Sthairya is steadiness, and Krishna is that quality in mountains. Gandha-matra is smell alone, the bare scent that makes earth earth. Sridhara Svami reads the list as a way to point the mind toward Krishna through whatever stands out. Uddhava has asked how to find Krishna in a world of many things. The answer is that he is the core of each: the strength inside the strong, the stillness inside the mountain.
After the first rain on dry ground, a smell rises from the soil itself. Nobody sprinkled it there. It is what the earth is, when it is simply earth. Krishna points to that kind of thing: not an ornament added to creation, but the very nature that makes each thing what it is.
1. Today, when you lift something heavy or finish a hard task, stop for a moment and notice the strength you used. Remember that Krishna says he is that strength. 2. This week, stand near a hill, a large rock or an old tree for two minutes. Notice how still it is. 3. After rain, or after watering a plant, bend down and smell the soil. Notice that the scent belongs to the earth itself.
A woman has nursed her husband through a long illness. At three in the morning she has to lift him from the bed once more, and her back aches. In that moment the verse offers a different way to see her own strength. The power in her arms and the patience to keep going are not only hers. Krishna calls them his. She might loosen her grip on the thought that she is the only one holding this up, and take the next small step calmly. Ordinary experience confirms that this kind of steadiness is easier when a person is rested and fed, so the body's needs still count. The verse does not promise that her strength will last, or that her husband will recover. It is not a substitute for medical care, for a nurse's help, or for another pair of hands when the lifting is too much.
