Of waters I am taste, the finest part. Of bright things I am fire. I am the shining of the sun, the moon and the stars. Of the sky I am sound, higher than the sky itself. Among those who honour the brahmins I am Bali. Among heroes I am Arjuna. Of all beings I am their standing, their arising, and their drawing back in.
Krishna goes on naming where Uddhava can find him. Three words carry the verse. Rasa means taste, and also the essence or sap of a thing, from a root meaning to savour. Krishna says he is the rasa of water: what makes water water to the tongue. Vibhavasu is a name for fire, 'wealth of light'. Pratisankrama means withdrawal or dissolution, a stepping back together into where things came from. Then the clauses. In water, he is its taste. Among bright things, he is fire. In sun, moon and stars, he is the shining itself. Of the sky, he is sound, which the text calls higher than the sky. Among those devoted to brahmins he is Bali, and among heroes, Arjuna. The last line turns from things to time. For every being he is the standing, the arising and the drawing back in: how it lasts, how it begins, how it ends. Why say it? Uddhava is about to lose Krishna's company, and Krishna is teaching him to find him everywhere. The commentators read the list as pointers to Krishna, not a ranking of things. These are glories to recognise, not powers to gain. The last line asks the listener to see that beginning and ending, too, are his.
A lamp stands in the middle of a room. Every wall glows, the cups on the shelf shine, a child's face is lit. All of it comes from the one flame. Krishna says the best of taste, light, sound and hero is like that: each shows his glory, the way each lit thing shows the lamp.
1. At your next meal, drink one glass of water slowly. Notice its taste for a few breaths. 2. At dusk, look at the sky for one minute. Whatever light you see, sun, moon or a first star, remember Krishna calls it his. 3. Stop for a minute and listen to the sounds around you without naming them. 4. When something in your day ends, a task or a meal, say quietly that it also belongs to him.
A retired teacher stands on her balcony on the evening of her last working day, tea going cold in her hand. The light is fading. A bell sounds from somewhere, and the taste of the tea is still on her tongue. She has been thinking only of what is over. The verse gives her something else to look at. The light, the bell and the taste are each named by Krishna as his. So is the last line: what begins, what lasts and what ends. Her ending is not left outside the list. It sits among the things he calls his own, next to the dusk she is watching. She can take in the plain things in front of her, and not only the loss. Ordinary experience agrees that paying attention to a taste or a sound slows a racing mind for a while. The verse does not promise that the ending will hurt less, or that the evening will feel like anything in particular. It does not replace the company of friends or a doctor's help if the sadness grows heavy.
