Moving, speaking, letting go, taking hold; the delight of pleasure and the sense of touch; taste, hearing, smell: I am the sense behind all the senses. Earth, air, space, water, fire, the great principle, its changes, the person, the unmanifest, passion, clarity and inertia, and what lies beyond them: I am these. I am the counting of them, the knowing, and the settled certainty about what each one is.
Krishna finishes a long list for Uddhava. First the body's doings: walking, speaking, letting go, grasping, and the pleasure and touch that go with them. Then taste, hearing and smell. Then the sense behind every sense. The word indriya means a faculty, a working power. Krishna says he is the power inside each of them, the reason an ear hears at all. Next come the five elements, earth, air, space, water and fire, and the mahat, the first great principle of creation. After it come vikara, the changes that grow out of that principle, and then purusha, the person who witnesses, and avyakta, the unmanifest ground. Last are the three gunas: sattva, which is clarity, rajas, which is restless passion, and tamas, which is heaviness. He is also what lies beyond them. Then comes a turn. He is prasankhyana, the full counting of these things, and the knowing, and tattva-vinishchaya, the settled certainty about each principle as it truly is. He is both the list and the understanding of the list. The teaching answers Uddhava's wish to know where Krishna can be found. The answer is everywhere, in how a person acts and perceives, and in the work of understanding. It offers no power. It asks the listener to see what is already working in them as his.
A house has a fan, a bulb, a kettle and a radio. Each does a different job and looks nothing like the others. Behind them all runs one current in the wires. Krishna says he is that current in every sense, element and principle. He is also the one who can read the whole wiring plan.
1. Tonight, sit for two minutes before eating and name quietly what each sense is doing: the sounds in the room, the touch of the chair, the smell of the food. 2. Take the first three bites slowly, noticing taste and texture. 3. Say once, in your own words, that the power behind your seeing and tasting is Krishna's. Then eat.
An old woman has just had the patch taken off her eye after cataract surgery. She looks at her kitchen. The kettle's steam, the blue of the cup and the clatter from the street all arrive at once. Her first thought is of the surgeon's skill. The verse offers her a second thought as well. Behind each act of seeing, hearing and touching there is a power she did not make, and Krishna says it is his. Step by step, she can name what she senses, then the elements and qualities it is built from, and then thank the source of the whole. Today's medicine explains sight and hearing through eyes, ears, nerves and the brain, and it has no counterpart for a single sense behind all senses. The old list of elements is not a chemistry table either. Ordinary experience does confirm one thing: a person who notices what they sense tends to value it more. The verse does not restore lost sight or hearing, and it does not replace the doctor.
