Nothing Exists Apart

Bhagavata Purana 11.16.38

Meaning · English

Nowhere is there anything apart from me. Not the lord, not the living soul, not a quality, not the one who holds it, not the whole of it in any sense. Through time I can count the atoms, but I cannot count my glories that way, for I bring forth universes by the crore.

Krishna is closing a long list of his glories. Four words carry the verse. Jiva is the living being, from jiv, to live. Guna is a quality or strand, literally a thread of a rope. Paramanu is the atom, param (furthest) joined with anu (tiny). Vibhuti is a glory, from vi and bhu, to spread out in many forms. He first draws the boundary: there is no lord, no soul, no quality, and no one who holds a quality that stands outside him. He says this in every sense, so there is no corner left over. He then compares counting. Time, working at his command, can number even the atoms. His glories cannot be numbered that way, because he makes universes by the crore, and each has its own countless things. Uddhava has just heard a list of the best of each kind. The list is a handful taken from a limitless field, and it is not the whole. The commentators take the verse as the reason for the list: the glories were named to point at one source, and a finished list was never the aim. That fits what comes next in the reading, where Krishna turns the listener away from collecting wonders. The verse asks Uddhava to drop the idea that Krishna has a size he can measure, and to see every kind of thing as resting in him.

A potter sits among cups, lamps, jars and toys, and a child asks how many kinds of thing he has made. Every one is clay, and none could stand without it. The clay is Krishna, the shapes are everything named, and the pile can always grow.

1. Tonight, take a handful of rice or dry beans and sit near a lamp. 2. Count them one by one until you tire, and notice where the mind wants to stop. 3. Then look round the room and name five different things, from a cup to a window, and think of them as all resting in Krishna. 4. Put the rice away without finishing the count.

A father and his daughter sit on the roof after a power cut. She asks how many stars there are, and he starts counting aloud, then gives up around the fortieth. Krishna teaches that atoms could be counted by time, yet his glories could not, since he makes universes by the crore. In that moment, the father's failed count stops being a defeat. The question moves from how many to what they rest in, and the child's wonder is allowed to stay without being turned into a number. Today's knowledge agrees that atoms are real and so many that no one counts them one at a time. Estimates come from mass and volume, not from tallying. Ordinary experience also shows that facing something far larger than our worries can loosen their grip for a while. The verse's own claim, that nothing exists apart from Krishna, is the text's teaching and is not something that can be checked by counting. It does not mend the day's troubles, cure illness or ease a loss. It offers a different way to stand under the sky.
