Radiance, beauty and good fortune, fame, lordship, modesty, renunciation, charm and blessing, valor, patient endurance, wisdom: wherever these appear, that is a part of me. In brief, I have told you all my glories. These are only movements of the mind, and are spoken of just as words name them.

Krishna ends his list of glories with a short inventory of qualities: radiance (tejas), beauty or splendor, fame, lordship, modesty, giving up, charm, good fortune, valor, endurance and knowledge. He says that wherever any of these shows itself, that is an amsha, a part, of him. The word vibhuti, glory, comes from a root meaning to be widely present. So the sense is that these qualities are his presence showing in the world, and he does not confine it to famous people. Then he turns the list around. He says he has told it briefly, and that all of it is manovikara. Vikara means a change or stirring, so these are movements of the mind. They are known only as speech names them. A person is called brilliant or famous, and the mind receives the name and responds. Krishna is not calling the qualities worthless. He is saying they are met through the mind's naming, and that the mind is not where they rest. This is taught here because Uddhava, like any listener, could take a list of glories and begin to chase them, whether as powers, as reputation or as objects to admire. Krishna wants him to see where they come from and where they are known. The text asks the listener to keep the source and the mind's stirring apart, so that splendor reminds him of Krishna and does not pull him away.

A lamp stands behind a pane of red glass, and the wall glows red. The light is the lamp's own, and the colour comes from the glass. Splendor is like that glow. Krishna is the light, while the mind's naming and wanting supply the tint.

1. Today, when you notice something admirable in a person, such as patience, skill or kindness, stop for a few breaths and silently name it. 2. Then recall that Krishna calls it a part of himself, and let your admiration rest there instead of in the person's image. 3. When someone praises you, notice how the pleasure rises in the mind. Watch it for one minute without adding to it. 4. Before sleep, recall one such moment and what the mind did with it.

A village headman is being garlanded at a felicitation. Everyone is clapping, and he feels pride swell in his chest and a quiet wish for more. Krishna's teaching would change that moment in small steps. He would notice that the warmth is a movement in his own mind, set off by words and faces. He would see that the patience, fairness or courage people are praising did not begin with him alone, because the text calls such qualities a part of Krishna. He could then take the garland gently, thank the people and not build a self-image on the applause. Ordinary experience agrees that praise is warm in the evening and thin by the next morning, while the quality it named stays useful. The text gives this as Krishna's own teaching about where glories come from, and it is not offered as a claim to be tested. It does not promise freedom from pride or the wish for recognition, and it does not make criticism hurt less. It only gives the listener a place to rest the credit.
