Hemalekha Teaches Faith, Effort, and Devotion

Tripura Rahasya 7.1

The story · English

Her husband had asked her, and Hemalekha, who understood the ways of the world well, answered him. "Listen, my dearest, and settle your mind first. The mind is like a monkey. It never stays still, and that is its nature. Ordinary people have suffered greatly because of it. A restless mind is the root of every sorrow. Notice that in deep sleep, when the mind stops moving, a person finds happiness. So quiet it now, and hear what I say." She warned him that words heard without respect are as good as unheard. They bear no fruit, like taking shelter under a tree that was only painted on a wall.

"Give up shaky, unsteady arguing," she went on. "It only destroys. Lean on sound reasoning instead, and a person quickly gains good results. Sound reasoning makes you steady in your practice, and from it grows faith. Look at how the world works, my dear. A farmer ploughs the land at a well-judged time. People trade in silver, gold, jewels and medicines out of faith. They decide by sound reasoning and drop the wavering kind. So settle on what is best for yourself using sound reasoning and faith together, and go after it. Do not turn back from effort because your arguments keep wobbling, like people who follow a crowd of the horned."

"Someone with faith who is committed to effort is never wholly defeated," Hemalekha said. "Hold firm to effort, and how could you fail to reach the fruit? Farmers gain grain through effort, merchants gain wealth, kings gain the glory of a kingdom, and learned brahmins gain knowledge, the home of every happiness. Servants gain their wages, the gods gain nectar, ascetics gain the highest world, and others gain what they long for, all through effort and action. Now tell me, thinking it over: what has a person of wavering arguments and no faith ever gained, and when, and how?"

"If results sometimes disappoint, and a person then loses trust in everything, you can see he is struck down by fate, his own worst enemy. So rely on effort, nourished by faith and sound reasoning, and choose the chief of all means to the highest good. Means come in many kinds. Among them, pursue the one that truly accomplishes the goal. Decide on it through sound reasoning and experience, and begin without delay. I will tell you all of it, so listen closely." She explained what the highest good is: that after which one grieves no more. Seen with a fine eye, sorrow touches everything.

"Whatever is mixed with sorrow is never the highest good," she said. "Wealth, sons, wives, kingdom, treasury, strength, fame, learning, intelligence, good looks, the body, every kind of beauty and prosperity: all of it is unsteady and sits in the mouth of the serpent of time. Each holds the seed of sorrow's sprout. How could any of it be the final means to the highest good? The highest good lies elsewhere. The mistaken notion that wealth and such are worth grasping comes from delusion. And the one who deludes is the Great Lord, maker of the whole world. That is why everyone is bewildered."

"Even a small portion of his power deludes," Hemalekha said, "and it touches only some people, not all, because the knowledge that answers it is limited. People cannot get past even a trickster of small learning. Who could get past the Great God of great illusion? Whoever knows, through counter-knowledge, even a little of this illusion, comes out of delusion, steady and well, and gains lasting happiness. Yet even such knowledge cannot be won without relying on the Lord of illusion, until he is pleased. So how could anyone cross the great delusion without pleasing him? Take refuge in him fully. Whoever pleases him gains the great knowledge by his grace, and will surely cross beyond his delusion."

"Other paths to the highest good have been taught too," she said, "but without the Great Lord's grace they do not bear fruit. So first worship the Lord, the cause of the universe. With devotion, one quickly practises the disciplines that destroy delusion. Now think. This world is plainly an effect. It has parts, like earth and the rest, and it began unseen. Reasoning, firmly backed by many scriptures, says an effect has a maker, one unlike every worldly maker. A scripture that claims the world has no maker is overruled by many others grounded in reason. A text that urges one's own ruin is only a seeming scripture, and dry reasoning alone is to be dropped. Some say the world is eternal and made by one without intelligence. That makes no sense, since action comes from intention, and we never see it without a mind behind it."

"So by sound reasoning and scripture together, the world has a maker, and he is unlike any worldly one. Since the world is beyond thought, he has unthinkable, endless power and unlimited ability. He is fully able to lift up those who come to him. So take refuge in him with your whole being. Here is an example. Even a limited earthly lord, pleased by honest service, gives a person what he wishes for his good. What would this Lord of the worlds not give, he who loves his devotees? Human rulers are unsteady, unkind and ungrateful, so their gifts do not last. The Supreme Lord is an ocean of compassion, grateful and steady. A kingdom with an unsteady ruler is seen to fall. So take refuge in him alone, with devotion, and do not fix your mind on the results. Worship takes many forms: from distress, from wanting something, or, rarely, with no reason at all. That last is true worship. The distressed are sometimes relieved and sometimes ignored. Those who seek gain get limited, uncertain results. Even a limited lord, seeing a person's reasonless devotion, comes under his power in time. This Lord of all is the one who rests in everyone's heart."
