Hemalekha Explains God to Hemachuda
Tripura Rahasya 7.56
The story · English
Hemalekha was still speaking to her husband, Hemachuda, about how fate and God relate. She said that God knows everything, and gives each result in its own time and quickly. When someone in need asks for something, God can arrange it. He usually waits for the ripening of that person's past actions and then gives the fruit. But if a devotee has no motive of his own and has no other refuge, God knows this fully and carries the burden of his welfare. He does not wait for the ripening. He sets aside even his own ordering of fate, completes the means himself, and joins the person to the result swiftly. This, she said, is what it means to be the Great Lord: a freedom that nothing can block.
She went on. Past action that has already begun, and fate itself, hold sway over one who turns away from the Lord. Everyone knows how the son of Mrikandu, who was wholly devoted to God, passed beyond what fate had set for him. Now she would give the reasoning, and she asked Hemachuda, dear as life, to listen. Fate and begun karma cannot be crossed by ordinary means, she said. Yet they only bind those who make no effort. That is why people overcome them through disciplined practice. Those who turn away from effort are swallowed by their past action like a serpent's prey, and they feel just what fate laid out. Fate is God's own power, whose nature is only his will. Since his will is always true, it cannot be crossed, yet it is dulled for one who rests in him.
So, she told him, give up wrong reasoning and take refuge in the Great Lord. Without any motive of his own, he will set you on the path to the highest good. This is the first step on the stairs to the palace of well-being, and without it nothing worthwhile comes at all. Hemachuda was delighted to hear his beloved speak this way. He asked her again: tell me who this Lord is, who can be my refuge, the maker of everything, free in himself, by whose power the world is held in order. People call him Vishnu, or Shiva, or Ganesha, or the Sun, Narasimha, the Buddha, Arhat, Vasudeva, breath, the Moon, fire, or karma, or atoms. Which of these should I take as God?
Hemachuda added that he was sure nothing was unknown to her. After all, the revered sage Vyaghrapada had seen the higher and lower, and her knowledge shone the same way, though she was a woman. He asked her, sweet of speech, to tell him, since he believed her. Pleased, Hemalekha answered. God, she said, is the one who makes and dissolves the whole web of the world. He is Vishnu, Shiva, Brahma, the Sun, the Moon. In every way he is all of it, and each tradition describes him. Yet he is not only Shiva, not only Vishnu, not only Brahma, nor any single one. She asked him to listen closely. Some say the maker is Shiva, with five faces and three eyes.
A maker, they argue, is like a potter: he has awareness and a body, and in the world we see that makers have bodies. We never see a maker who is bodiless or unaware. Only a conscious being is truly a maker. Even the soul in dreams sets aside its heavy body and, with a body of pure awareness, creates whatever it wishes. So a body is a tool for the doer. A soul that needs tools has incomplete freedom. But the Lord makes the world with perfect freedom, needing nothing, and the world he makes is complete. So he has no body. Otherwise he would depend on materials, place and time, like an ordinary soul, and his full lordship would fail, even before creation. His making of all things would be broken.
Hemalekha ended by saying the Lord creates without any visible body, and so, my beloved, he truly has no gross body. People with coarse minds are confused by this formless highest form. Devotees, however, meditate on him in whatever way they love, and the jewel that grants every wish takes that form for them. So God is conscious, and his body is supreme awareness. That awareness is the great Being, the empress, Tripura, in whom the world appears as one and as many, like a city seen in a mirror. All is one in her, so no form is higher or lower. Those are only ideas laid on top. So the wise should worship the highest, formless form. If you cannot, worship a form your mind holds firmly, without any motive, and you reach the highest good. There is no other way, even in ten million births.
