Hemalekha Explains Her Allegorical Family to Hemachuda

Tripura Rahasya 8.1

The story · English

Hemachuda had listened to his dear wife Hemalekha, and through her words he had come to see the truth of the Great Lord: that Tripura is pure consciousness itself. His mind grew steady. He knew the supreme goddess Tripura, who takes the form of the qualities, and he turned to her with one undivided feeling. So he worshipped, and some months went by. Then Tripura, the highest mistress, showed him her grace in his heart. His mind turned away from sense pleasures and settled into deep reflection. The text pauses here to say how rare this is. Without the grace of the Supreme, a reflective mind is hard to find in this world, and it is the chief cause of freedom. Until the mind leans toward reflection, no hundred methods will bring lasting good.

One day, deep in thought, Hemachuda went to meet Hemalekha in private. She saw her beloved coming to her house from far off. She rose, brought him in, seated him on her own seat, and honored him properly, beginning with washing his feet. Then she spoke, her words sweet as nectar. "Dearest, I see you again after so long. Has your body been free of illness? A body is, after all, a home for disease. Tell me what happened, because you have not remembered me. You never let a part of the day pass without seeing me and speaking to me. Why this change? Perhaps something displeased you. Or were you somewhere else, even in a dream? How did you pass even one night, which felt like an age? Before, a single moment without me was hard for you to bear." Having said this, she embraced him and seemed sad for a moment.

Hemachuda, though held in her arms, was hardly moved at all. He said, "Dear one, you should not try to bewilder me like this. I know you well, and you have no cause for sorrow. You know both the higher and the lower, and you are steady. How could confusion touch you? "I came to ask you something, so listen. Earlier you told me about your own life. Explain it to me plainly now. Who is the mother you spoke of? Who is your friend? Who is her husband, and who are his sons and the others? And where do I stand in all this, and where are you? I do not take your words as untrue. But I see you spoke through hidden meanings. Please explain, so that I understand clearly. I have taken refuge in you. Cut the doubt in my heart."

Hemalekha heard him, and her face and eyes grew bright. She saw that his mind was very clear and that he carried the Supreme's grace. She thought, "He has turned away from sense pleasures with great steadiness. The Goddess has pierced him with her power, and his stored merit has ripened. This is the time to awaken him." She told him, "Lord, you have great fortune, won through the Lord's favor. Otherwise no one finds pleasure tasteless. That, and a mind inclined to reflection, are the first signs of grace. Now I will explain. "My mother is the supreme Consciousness. My friend is Intellect. Ignorance is the false one, and Intellect keeps company with her. Ignorance's power is plain in the world: she shows a snake in a rope and brings great fear."

"Her son is Great Delusion, and his son is the Mind. The Mind's wife is Imagination, and they have five sons, the five senses. Their dwelling is the body's cavity. The stealing of objects is the mind's impressions, and its enjoyment is like dream enjoyment. Imagination's sister is Hope, the great devourer, and her two sons are Anger and Greed. Their city is the body. "My great mantra is the stirring of my true nature. Breath is the mind's dear friend, who moves among things. Places like Kantara are the hells. That is the whole account. "My union with Intellect is called samadhi. Reaching my mother's world is freedom, my dear. You are of the same kind. Understand this by reasoning, and reach the highest good."
