How many kinds of restraint are taught, Krishna, and how many of observance? What is calm of mind, and what is mastery of the senses? What is patient endurance, and what is steadiness? What is giving, what is austerity, what is courage? What do we call truth, and what is the right? What is renunciation? What is the wealth people want? What is sacrifice, and what is the fee paid for it? Lord, what is a person's real strength? What is good fortune, and what is gain? What is learning, what is modesty, what is true beauty of character? What is happiness, and what is sorrow?

Uddhava is asking for definitions. He has just heard Krishna describe the path in large strokes, and now he wants the everyday words pinned down. Several of them are Sanskrit words. Yama is restraint, from yam, to hold in check: the things one refrains from. Niyama is observance, the things one takes up and keeps. Shama is calm of the mind, and dama is the training of the senses. Titiksha is endurance, from tij, to bear heat and cold, gain and loss, without complaint. Dhriti is steadiness, the holding on that keeps a person from falling apart. Then come giving, austerity, courage, truth, renunciation, sacrifice and its fee, strength, learning, modesty, and finally happiness and sorrow. He asks first how many kinds of restraint and observance there are. Then he asks what each of the others is, one after another. He also asks what a person's real wealth is and what counts as real gain. The question underneath is that everyone uses these words and few people could say what they are. Uddhava asks because he cannot walk the path with words he only half understands. The commentators treat the list as a request for the exact marks of each quality, so that nothing is left to guesswork. The verse asks nothing of the listener yet. It sets the questions down, and Krishna answers them afterwards.

A new kitchen with a dozen identical jars and no labels. Flour, salt, sugar and ash all look alike, and cooking becomes guesswork. Uddhava's questions are the labels: each virtue gets a name and a plain description, so the reader knows what is in the jar.

1. Tonight, pick one word from the list, such as patience, courage or giving. 2. Write one sentence saying what it actually looks like, using a real moment from your own week. 3. Tomorrow, notice one time you used that word loosely about yourself or someone else. 4. Ask yourself whether your sentence fits what happened. Change the sentence if it doesn't.

A mother is washing dishes late in the evening when her teenage daughter asks, quite seriously, what being brave really is. The mother opens her mouth and finds she has only slogans. Uddhava's questions speak to that moment. First, the mother admits she has used the word for years without ever saying what it covers. Second, she tries a concrete answer from her own life, such as the day she told a hard truth to a relative, and sees that it differs from the answer she would have guessed. Third, she and her daughter can now compare cases and disagree about something definite, rather than trading a vague word back and forth. Ordinary experience bears this out: a quality we cannot describe is hard to practise or to notice in ourselves. The limit is plain. Naming bravery, patience or steadiness does not supply any of them when they are needed. It does not settle every hard case, and it is no help for a worry that needs a doctor or a counsellor. It only makes the conversation clearer.
