Who is wise, and who is a fool? What is the true path, and what is the wrong road? What is heaven, and what is hell? Who is a real friend, and what is a home? Who is rich, and who is poor? Who is miserly, and who is a master? Tell me these answers, lord of the good, and tell me their opposites as well.

Uddhava puts a string of short questions to Krishna. Three words carry the weight. Pandita, the wise person, is one who discerns, who sees what is what. Utpatha is the wrong road, literally a way out of the path. Kripana, the miser, is the pitiable one, who has plenty and cannot use it. Uddhava then calls Krishna satpati, lord of the good, and asks for the viparita, the opposites. He does not want only the quality. He wants its counterfeit named beside it, so he can tell them apart. The questions run in pairs: wise and foolish, road and wrong road, heaven and hell, friend and home, rich and poor, miser and master. Each is a word everyone uses and few define. The commentators take the request for opposites as a request for sharp edges, so that nothing stays vague. The reason is in the lines before. Krishna has just spoken of a calm, clear mind and of restraint, and Uddhava wants the working terms that go with it. He asks as someone who means to live by the answers. What it asks of the listener is that he stop leaning on borrowed meanings. Rich, home, friend and wise are words he has been using without examining them.

A trail map for a hill shows the main path, and also marks the dead-end tracks that look like paths and the spots where hikers go wrong. Uddhava is asking for that kind of map of life: each good word set beside its look-alike, so the walker knows which track is which.

1. Tonight, take a page and write four words down the left side: rich, friend, home, wise. 2. Beside each, write in one honest line what you actually mean by it, not what you were taught. 3. Next to each, write its opposite and one case from your own week that looked like the first but was the second. 4. Keep the page and read it again in three days. Notice which lines you would now change.

A retired schoolteacher sits at the kitchen table on the evening her pension arrives. A neighbour's new car is parked outside, and she feels poor. Uddhava's habit of asking what a word means would slow her down. She asks what rich actually is, and finds she had measured it against the car. She then lists what she has: a roof, a sister who came every day when she was ill, a pot of tea going cold. She names that sister a friend and this room a home, and notices she had been using the word poor for something else, which was envy. Ordinary experience bears out that comparing ourselves with others makes us feel poorer. In the tradition's teaching, the questions are meant to be answered by Krishna. They are not for each person to invent. Naming her blessings does not pay the electricity bill or ease a real shortage, and it does not replace advice from a doctor or a counsellor where one is needed.
