Meaning · English

Not harming, truthfulness, not taking what is not given, non-attachment, modesty, not hoarding, faith, chastity, silence, steadiness, forgiveness, fearlessness. Cleanliness, repeating the divine name, austerity, offering into the fire, faith, welcoming guests, worshipping me, walking to holy places, working for the good of others, contentment, serving the teacher. These are the twelve restraints and, with them, the twelve observances. Practised, dear one, they give a person what he wishes, as a cow gives milk.

Two words carry the teaching. Yama, from yam, to hold in check, is a restraint: something a person refrains from. Niyama, from the same root with ni, to bind in, is an observance: something a person commits to and does. Uddhava had asked how many of each there are. Krishna answers by counting twelve and twelve. The restraints are about conduct and the mind. They are not harming, truthfulness, not taking what is not given, non-attachment, modesty, not hoarding, faith, chastity, silence, steadiness, forgiveness and fearlessness. The observances are about daily practice. They are cleanliness, japa (quiet repetition of the divine name), austerity, offering into the sacred fire, faith again, welcoming guests, worship of Krishna himself, visiting holy places, working for others' good, contentment and serving a teacher. Faith appears in both lists, once as a settled conviction and once as a practice. The last clause gives the reason. Krishna says that those who keep these twelve and twelve draw from them whatever they want, as a cow is milked. The word he uses for milking, duh, suggests steady daily drawing, not a single windfall. He calls Uddhava tata, dear one, so the list is given warmly, as a father hands something down. What it asks of the listener is regular keeping of both lists, side by side.

A kitchen garden has a fence and a watering can. The fence keeps the goats out, and the water is carried every morning. Neither one alone gives vegetables. The restraints are the fence, the observances are the daily watering, and the harvest comes to the one who does both.

1. Tonight, choose one restraint from the list, such as truthfulness or not hoarding, and write it on a slip of paper. 2. Choose one observance, such as cleanliness, and decide a fixed time tomorrow for it, for example five minutes tidying one shelf after dinner. 3. Keep the slip in your pocket for a week and make a small mark each evening when you kept both. 4. On the seventh evening, notice which was easier to keep, the holding back or the doing.

A young man has just moved to a new city for his first job. It is the night before he starts. His flat is bare, no one is watching him, and he is writing down what he wants to keep hold of. He writes two columns without quite meaning to. On one side are the things he will not do: lie to his manager, take credit that is not his, let fear decide for him. On the other are the things he will do daily: keep the room clean, call home, feed whoever comes to the door. The verse gives that same shape, with a refusal list and a daily list, and says the two together draw out what a person wants. Ordinary experience bears this out in small ways. Habits kept daily last longer than resolutions made once, and a clean room and a kept word make the next day lighter. The verse does not say how much will be granted, or when. It does not promise that the job goes well, or that loss and illness stay away. Krishna's claim is about what steady practice yields over time, and that is for each person to find out by keeping it.
