Calm is the mind fixed on me. Self-control is holding the senses in check. Patience is bearing pain. Steadiness is mastery over the tongue and the sexual urge. The highest gift is to lay down the rod and threaten no creature. Giving up desire is what is called austerity. Courage is conquering one's own nature. Truth is seeing all beings alike. The poets also praise another truth: speech that is pleasant and kind. Purity is not clinging to the fruit of one's actions. Renunciation is the letting go of such clinging.
Krishna defines ordinary virtue-words so that each one has a working meaning. Three words carry the most. Shama, calm, is a settled mind, and Krishna says it settles by resting on him. Dama, self-control, is the senses held in check, a separate thing from calm. Titiksha, patience, is bearing pain without being knocked over by it. The rest follow. Steadiness is mastering appetite for taste and for sex. The best gift is to lay down the rod, meaning no one need fear you. Austerity is giving up desire, and not hardship for its own sake. Courage is winning over one's own nature, a harder battlefield than any outside. Truth is seeing everyone as alike. Krishna adds that the poets also call pleasant, kind speech a truth. Purity is working without clinging to results, and renunciation is the same letting go. Each definition moves a virtue from outward show to inward act. Uddhava had asked what makes a person wise or foolish, and these definitions fill in the picture of a wise person. The commentators generally read the laying down of the rod as giving up harm to living beings. What Krishna asks of the listener is to test each quality by where it sits: in the mind, in the senses, in the hand that would strike, and in the grip on outcomes.
A jar of muddy water left on a shelf. Nobody stirs it, and the silt sinks until the water clears and the bottom shows. Calm in the verse is like this: the mind, left resting on one steady point, stops churning, and what was hidden becomes visible.
1. Tonight, choose one conversation you expect to be tense, and before speaking, take three slow breaths and rest your mind on one steady thought. 2. In that conversation, say only what is true and kind, and drop the sharp remark that you would normally add. 3. Once today, when you feel the urge to reach for a snack or your phone, wait two minutes and notice the urge rise and fade. 4. Before sleep, name one thing you did today without checking how it would be praised.
A woman stands at the stove after a long day when her father-in-law makes a sharp remark about the food. Her hand tightens on the ladle. The verse's picture of calm and kind speech changes the moment in steps. First she holds still instead of answering, which is the self-control the verse names. Then she bears the sting for a few breaths without hitting back. Then she chooses words that are true and pleasant, and she does not punish him with a day of silence, which is a quiet kind of rod. Ordinary experience confirms that tiredness weakens restraint, so the moment is hardest exactly when it matters. The limit is plain: none of this makes the remark kind, removes the hurt, or settles a long family strain. If the strain runs deep, talking it through with someone trusted or with a doctor or counsellor is sound sense. The verse offers a way to meet the moment, and the moment itself stays as hard as it was.
