Dharma is the wealth people truly want. I am the sacrifice, the Lord most worthy of worship. The teacher's fee is the handing on of knowledge, and control of the breath is the highest strength. My lordly fortune is the real good fortune, and the best gain is devotion to me. Knowledge is the cancelling of the sense of separateness in the self. Modesty is disgust at wrong deeds. Beauty and glory are virtues, beginning with freedom from craving. Happiness is going beyond both pain and pleasure. Pain is longing for the pleasures of desire. The learned person is the one who knows bondage and release.

Uddhava has asked what counts as wealth, strength, gain, knowledge and happiness. Krishna answers by renaming each one. The word to hold is bhakti, loving devotion, from bhaj, to share in. He calls it the best gain. Second is vidya, knowledge, which here means the sense of being cut off from others and from the Self falling away. Third is nairapekshya, being free of expectation, a state where nothing is waiting on a result. Fourth is dakshina, the priest's fee at a sacrifice. Clause by clause, Krishna says the wealth worth wanting is dharma. He calls himself the sacrifice. The teacher is paid by being given knowledge. Strength is steady breath, not muscle. Fortune is his own lordly state, and gain is devotion to him. Modesty is a recoil from wrongdoing. Beauty is made of virtues. Happiness is stepping past the swing between pain and pleasure, and pain is the hunger for pleasure. The wise person knows what binds and what frees. He gives these definitions because Uddhava is being prepared to leave ordinary prizes behind. The list sets a different price on things the world already prizes. Commentators generally read it as a reordering of values, not a rejection of them. It asks the listener to measure gain, strength and happiness by what loosens the knot of craving.

A market where the price tags have been swapped back to true worth. Bread is dear, trinkets are cheap, and the gold-plated clock is marked down. The shopper keeps walking the same aisles, but the labels now say what each thing is worth. Krishna's list does this with wealth, strength and happiness.

1. Tonight, write down three things you wanted today: a purchase, a reply, a bit of praise. 2. Beside each, note whether getting it eased the wanting or only fed it. 3. Tomorrow, when you feel a pull toward something, breathe slowly for one minute before you act. Notice whether the pull softens. 4. This week, pass one useful thing you know to someone who needs it, with no payment asked.

A man lies awake scrolling past a friend's photos of a new car and a bigger flat. By midnight he feels poor, though nothing in his own life has changed since morning. The verse would change the moment in steps. First it names the ache: Krishna calls pain the longing for pleasure, so the pain is the wanting, not the missing car. Second, it gives him another place to look for riches: conduct he can stand behind, and knowledge he can pass on. Third, it gives the body something to do. Slow breathing is described as strength, and ordinary experience bears out that a slower breath settles a racing mind. He puts the phone down and the wanting loses some of its grip. The verse does not promise the longing will vanish for good, and it does not mend real money trouble. If the sleeplessness or low mood keeps returning, a doctor is the right person to see.
